Description

Newspapers report a large fire in downtown Minneapolis (Dec 27–28, 1920) that forced suspension of business in several buildings including the Union State Bank building. No article mentions a depositor run or permanent failure; suspension appears to be a temporary closure due to fire damage, so I classify as a suspension with likely reopening (no explicit reopening reported).

FIRE IN MINNEAPOLIS CAUSES HEAVY DAMAGE Minneapolis, Dec. 28. Fire which drove 100 persons into the streets during the subzero weather forced the suspension of business in four downtown buidlings including two banks, and threatened to sweep thru a valuable section of the business district, was under control at noon yesterday after doing damage estimated at $200,000. The greatest damage was done at 523/ Marquette avenue. where a fourstory brick front structure was completely destroyed. Other buildings either demaged or menaced SO that their occupants had to leave, were the Rand building. the State Bank of Commerce building and the Union State bank building. Fire lines were drawn about the burning area SO that the thousands of speculators who gathered at the scene might not be injured by falling walls. Because of the large sums of cash in the two banks, detectives were assigned to protect the institutions.
