EXAMINERS CHECK BOOKS OF WESTMORELAND BANK Cashier Makes Unsuccessful Attempt to End Life WESTMORELAND, Tenn., Sept. 30.-(Spl.)-A thorough check was being made here today of the books of the Farmers and Merchants bank, which closed its doors Monday and whose cashier, M. Hodges 60, attempted to end his own life. The bank closed its doors Monday at noon and the state department of banking took charge. Hodges is sa d to have confessed to inspectors of the state department of banking Wednesday of a shortage of $6,532 in the bank's accounts. The cashier went to his home Monday and is reported to have told his wife the situation, declaring that he was going to shoot himself rather than face charges of defrauding the bank. Wednesday
