DUE TO JOKE. Run on Bank Caused by Remark of a Young Man. A joke, with Texas Independence day as a basis, caused a run on the Lumbermen's National bank of Hous ton on Monday which for a time as sumed serious proportions. Adoption of a resolution by the Clearing House association and full explanation restored confidence. Jokingly. a young man on Friday remarked that the Lumbermen's National bank would not open on Saturday, It didn't. Neither did any other bank in the state. It was Texas Independence day. Story gained currency aud on Monday an unmistakable run startrd. Bank remaiued open until 5 o'clock Monday afternoon, and at the close of business the deposits were $177,000 more than withdrawals

UPWARD TREND IN LAND DEALS IS EMPHASIZED Real estate activity in Houston for the start of 1930 has been healthy and showed decided upward trend during the first 17 days January. In that period, deeds numbering 732 and aggregating considerations of $2,536.1 were filed for record in the county clerk's office. In the main transactions involved various subdivisions, purchases for investment purposes and trading in semi- business property. few outstanding deals were included. Among the major transactions were the Back Bay Realty corporation sold to Christie & Hobby parts of lots and 11 in block 348, being 621/2 by 125 feet fronting on San Jacinto street. Deal completed December for of $40,000. Mrs. Cecile C. Fonsworth, acting for herself and as guardian, sold to the Varner Realty company tract on House street for $10,000. The land involved is the Civic Center area. M. DeGeorge and Sam Guarino purchased from the Second National bank. receiver in the case of Bremond H. Burton vs. Henry Burton, lot 10 and the north 50 by 100 feet of lot 11, block 397, South Side: five lots in block addition, and five lots in block 11, Gastonia addition. S. Murphy of Dallas sold to the Mid- Coast Realty corporation lot and 25 by 105 feet of lots and in block Aldmeda Place. Consideration, Hall Building company sold to S. Phelps, attorney, part of lots and 15, block Riverside Extension for $11,000. The Varner Realty company transferred all its interest in real. personal and mixed estate to the Varner company for a consideration of $700,000. A. E. Kiesling to B. C. and A. H. Hess, lots and 11 feet of lot and 12 by 119 feet of lot 12. block 11, Lockhart, Connor Barziza addition. Consideration. $30,000. In addition, deeds were also filed for the sale of large number of dence ranging in price as high as $15,000.
