THE BIDDEFORD BANKS. Condition of the National Still Unknown. SAVINGS BANK READY TO RESUMI BUSINESS. No Defalcation in Either of Them. [Special to the Press.] BIDDEFORD, 17-There is not much to added to your despatch of yesterday mornin about the affairs of the Biddeford Savings National banks. Judge Humphreys who been examining the latter bank has complete his work but has not yet written out his repor Your correspondent had an interview with this afternoon but found him rather reticen It appears from his statement that he is making the examination exactly in his officia capacity. The late Mr. Chapman was formerly treasurer of the Savings and National and continued to fill both these position until the statute Was passed forbidding treasurer of a savings bank of certain size to the same time hold the position of treasurer a National bank. Mr. Chapman had to resig one office and chose to abandon that of urer of the National bank. Mr. Goodwin accordingly elected Treasurer of this bank. was Treasurer in name, however, rather tha in reality, as Mr. Chapman continued to tend to the affairs of the bank as before, was virtually the Treasurer. When Mr. man died Mr. Goodwin was somewhat at loss to know what to do. He very wisel decided to call upon Judge Humphreys to amine the bank, and that gentleman came Biddeford in response to his request, and by order of the government. He is in whether it is his duty to make any report the government at all. He will report to directors however in a few days. All he was willing at present to say the condition of the bank pending his was this: There had been no defalcation. had examined very carefully and could find the slightest trace of such a thing. money had been lent to Mr. Hobson howeve than was justifiable. What the amount he refused to state, but there is reason to lieve from other sources, that $150,000 is far out of the way.
