Washington, Nov. 25.-The comptroller of the currency has been advised that by order of the board of directors the First National bank of Leesville, La., has closed its doors. No cause is assigned. MISCELLANEOUS. Newton C. Dougherty pleaded guilty at Peoria, Ill., to five of the charges of forgery against him and was given an indeterminate sentence, from one to 14 years, in Joliet penitentiary. Five convicts in the prison at Jefferson City, Mo., fully armed, in a desperate attempt to escape, killed two officials and wounded a third, dynamited the prison gate and were recaptured after a fierce battle in which one of the felons was killed and another wounded. Senator Foraker presented his rate bill to the senate committee. It authorizes the federal court to define an unreasonable charge and is designed to avoid giving rate-making power to the commerce commission. The attorney general of Minnesota has begun proceedings against two elevator companies at St. Paul, charged with violating the anti-trust law. Mrs. William McWilliams and her five children were murdered in their farmhouse near Independence, Ia. The husband and father is under arrest suspected of the crime. Turkey having rejected the terms of the powers, the joint naval forces will act at once. Judge Advocate Marix in the courtmartial of Cadet Meriwether caused a sensation by challenging the fitness of Rear Admiral McCormick to sit as a member of the court. Webb, president of the Nashotah college, was ananimously elected bishop coadjuting to Bishop Isaac Lea Nicholson, of the Milwaukee Episcopal diocese. General News Senators Dolliver and Cullom stand apart from the rest of the republican members of the senate interstate commerce committee on the railroad rate question. The brotherhood of American yoemen decided to hold the next conclave in Minneapolis. A movement to increase rates of insurance in the order failed to pass. Congressman Pino Guerra of Cuba is charged by the prosecuting judge of San Juan y Martinez with the leadership of the insurrectionary plotting in that vicinity. Gross earnings of the Atchison in October are reported to have been about $6,750,000. This amount would exceed the gross earnings in the month last year by $1,200,000. Sparks from the Wires. Fire destroyed the laundry of the State hospital for nervous diseases at Little Rock, Ark. Lieut. Hugh Kirkman, Eighth cavalry, has been arrested at Fort McKinley, P. I., charged with forgery. Notice was given by the Pennsylvania railroad that it would issue no more passes to Pittsburg politicians because the privilege had been abused. Secretary Root, it is reported, will soon go to Brazil on an important mission for the Roosevelt administration. It is understood that he will seek tc arrange for better trade relations. Leaders in the recent reform campaign in Cincinnati met and resolved to continue the fight and to appoint a committee to compel the restitution of city and county funds wrongfully diverted from the treasury. The Comptroller of the Currency has been advised that by order of the board of directors the First National bank of Leesville, La., has closed its doors. No cause is assigned. Gov. Folk was the principal speaker at a mass meeting in St. Louis which passed resolutions indorsing the issue of $11,000,000 of bonds for a free bridge across the Mississippi. A. B.
