PIONEER LUMBER FIRM, GRINNELL, IS DISCONTINUED Coutts Estate Disposes of Stock; Subsistence Garden Program. Special to The Democrat Grinnell, Ia., April 6.βThe Richardson-Phelps Lumber Co., and the York Lumber Co. have purchased the Coutts Building Materials Co. holdings from Ross V. Coutts, executor of the Coutts estate. The Coutts firm was founded in 1885 by R. G. Coutts, whose death occurred last year. He had erected many of the homes and commercial buildings in Grinnell. Garden Work Organized. Sub-chairmen have been appointed for the subsistence garden program by C. S. George, Grinnell, director of subsistence gardens in Poweshiek county. The group includes John Davis, Montezuma; the Rev. J. H. Freedline, Brooklyn; John Eichhorn, Malcom; L. B. Cochran, Guernsey; A. C. Crosky, Searsboro; Homer Musser, Barnes City; J. W. Scovel, Deep River; and T. K. Barber, Hartwick. Government seeds are being distributed to those on relief and the county organization is furnishing seed potatoes in limited amounts. A seven-acre tract, in the west part of Grinnell, has been donated by Grinnell college for garden use. The plot has been divided into 50 lots, each 50x100 feet. Guernsey Bank Pays. Nearly $8,000 will be paid to depositors of the closed Guernsey Savings bank Monday, Harry Weeks, receiver, has announced. It is the third payment of 10 per cent since the bank suspended. Extend Airport Lease. The Grinnell airport will be continued by the government air service until June 30 O. Dale Smith, president of the Grinnell Chamber of Commerce, has been informed. The new air field at Montezuma to replace the Grinnell field will be ready at that time. Women's League Directors. Seven Grinnell college women have been chosen by the Women's Self Government league for 1935-36. Kathleen Peck town women's representative, is the only Grinnell girl on the board.
