BUSTED BANKS AND PROFESSIONAL POLITICIANS Last week I published a series of advertisements for the definite purpose of creating comment and stimulating thought in the minds of the people of this county. Here are the REASONS and MY POSITION in this political fight in Indian River County. Many people outside of Vero Beach might wonder who I am and where I live- ! am a Florida cracker boy born in Duval county in 1901. I have lived every day for the past three years on the I old Pettibone Grove, which I own, west of Vero Beach. have been a member of a leading civic club of that city for two years. For the past eight years I have waged relentless war on the State Wide Political Machine of Ernest Amos. present Comptroller of Florida: Hit a man on the chin financially ONCE and he will grin and take it. Hit him TWICE. tell him it is an accident and he will take it. But hit him in the same place THREE times and you can't blame him for getting sore. Why should the same bank get in trouble three times? Mr. Amos is either too weak or he has built up such a powerful political machine that he can't control it. His army of Liquidators and Receivers take years and years to pay their first dividend (Vero Beach Bank and Trust Co. has paid four cents on the dollar since October, 1928). The people at last seem to be giving up in dispair because they seem to realize that all the meat is being removed from the carcus of what was once a bank. What Has This to Do With the Local Situation? First I want to clear up a matter. I make a public record here in black and white-that I do my own thinking and pay my own bills. I admire Eli Walker as a fearless, honest man, but he has no control or influence over me in the smallest degree. It is said I have harmed Douglas Baker by jumping into this fight. If this is true IT IS JUST TOO BAD. The chips will have to fall where they may. I am under no obligation to Douglas Baker and if he was any other man I would not be shaken from the principles I am fighting for as right. What Am I Fighting For In Indian River County? I am fighting to smash what I consider the biggest menace in Florida-namely a Political Machine originating in the Comptroller's office in Tallahassee and reaching its tentacles into every county in the state. There is usually one or more men in each county who are Amos' lieutenants in their respective locations, either appointed BANK RECEIVERS or COUNTY OFFICIALS who are UNDER OBLIGATION to Amos. Now, if the people of Indian River County believe Amos and his elaborate system built up over a sixteen-year period is all wrong- Why should they tolerate the very things at home which they register disapproval of in a state office? The PROFESSIONAL POLITICIAN and his AMOS CROWD composed of lawyers licking up fat fees out of the poor depositors' money under the name of 'Cost of Liquidation' and influential men laughing to themselves because they owe busted banks money and have succeeded in getting a receiver friendly to them appointed. These fellows must go- You people who lost your money think this over and let your ballot decide if there is any room in Indian River County for any part of this Amos Machine to remain in a strategic position to maybe reorganize again under another head. That strategic position in this particular case is the office of the Clerk of the Court. This is the information booth of the entire county. In other words this office is most valuable to the PROFESSIONAL POLITICIANS. Personally I like Miles Warren and think he is a good fellow, even if he did walk around two counties and blame my old Dad, whose name by the way is Joe L. Earman, for something he did not know a thing about, just to avoid this issue with me. Last week I asked a simple question in the paper. I have listened at the four speeches Miles Warren has made in the north end of this county this week. I have listened in vain for him to deny he was under obligation to Ernest Amos.
