Description

Articles indicate the Shenandoah County Bank suspended and was insolvent (stock offered at 50¢ on the dollar) with an application for a receiver at the January court term, implying permanent closure/receivership. A later article (July 1887) references the bank's suspension in context of a wider panic, but the primary evidence points to bank insolvency and receivership.

Article Text

The gold gamblers of New York created a panic last week which sent many of them to grass. Secretary Fairchild sent $9,000,000 from the National Treasury to relieve them. Why did he not send a small amount to Woodstock to relieve the pressure when the Shenandoah county bank suspended? We have long noticed that this government was made for the benefit of the speculators, dudes, gamblers and confidence men of Manhattan Island, the outlying province of Britain.
