The discharge of many competent emergency officers who held responsible positions in the supply organization presented difficulties and complicated the task. The aircraft production program, slow in getting started, was in BANK CLOSED AFTER PRESIDENT'S SUICIDE Directors Shut Doors, Predicting a Run-Trust Firm Also Fails to Open. By the Associated Press. MEMPHIS, November 1.-The Columbia Savings Bank and the Columbia Mortgage & Trust Co. did not open for business today following the suicide late yesterday of Charles L. Tucker, 49, president of the two institutions. Directors of the Columbia Bank adopted a resolution stating it was deemed inadvisable to continue business "on account of the pending probability of a run," and asked H. L. Grigsby, State superintendent of banks, to take charge and liquidate the bank. Stockholders of the trust company, the same men as those composing the bank's board of directors, decided that a petition of voluntary bankruptcy would be filed today.

MEMPHIS BANK FAILS: PRESIDENT SUICIDES Memphis, Tenn., Nov. 1.-(United Press) Columbia Savings Bank, with deposits of $665,000 and Christmas savings accounts of around $30,000, was closed today by State bank examiners, following the suicide late Monday of Charles L. Tucker, 49, president. Petition for a voluntary receivership will be filed later in the day. The Columbia Mortgage Company, parent organization of the savings bank, with liabilities of $900,000. represented in the issuance of uncertified debenture bonds, also suspended business. Voluntary petition in bankruptcy will be filed later in the day. President Suicides The president of the twin institutions fired bullet through his brain at his home late Monday Failure of the two institutions involves the savings of approximately 5,000 depositors and investors, hundreds of whom are women. Christmas savings accounts were held by about 1,000 depositors. State bank examiners started an examination of the books of the savings bank at 10 a. m. Tuesday. Directors of the bank, who are directors of the Mortgage and Trust company. were in session all night, following the suicide of President Tucker They issued the following statement for the bank shortly before daylight. Bank Closed "Whereas, in view of the death of the president of the Columbia Savings Bank, the board of directors do not deem it advisable to continue business in view of the pending probability of a. run on said bank "Whereas, in view of the above situation and condition, and to the end that the interests of all depositors, creditors and stockholders in said bank may be better protected, the directors of the above bank hereby request H. L. Grigsby, state superintendent of banks for the state of Tennessee, to take charge of said bank and to liquidate same in accordance with the banking laws governing same Be it further resolved. that we hereby waive the five days' notice authorized by law within which said bank-may answer the bill or petition of said H. Grigsby, superintendent of banks, applying for a receivership in this case. The crash followed the action of the Prudential Life Insurance company of New York in refusing to handle any more of the company's business first mortgage notes. A long distance telephone message was received by President Tucker at 3:30 m. Monday from Neely Grant, vice president, who went to New York to discuss the situation with the life insurance corporation. Grant told Tucker the Prudential absolutely refused to handle any more of their business. Tucker left the bank and went to downtown garage, where his call was kept. He motored to his home.
