Description

The articles report that banks in Philadelphia (and Baltimore) suspended specie payments in mid-February 1841. There is no mention of depositor runs in these excerpts; the suspension appears tied to broader specie/resumption pressures (macroeconomic). No explicit permanent closure or receivership is mentioned; historically such suspensions were often temporary, so I classify as suspension_reopening. Date extracted from Article 1: Feb 18, 1841. OCR errors corrected (e.g., 'suspension of the banks in Philadelphia and Baltimore').

ACOUSTA, Feb. 18. Cotton.-The demand for this article, fell off considerably, on the day succeeding the date of our last review of the market, owing to the news of the suspension of the banks in Philadelphia and Baltimore, and the fear entertained by dealers that money affairs with us would also become unsettled. a this state the market remained until Tuesday morning last, the few sales which had been made showing a decline generally of to. and in some instances the concession made by sellers was equal to c. per lb., on qualities below fair. Since Tuesday morning, however, the demand has been fair, and the market closes with a decline generally of 1c. per lb. on our quotations of last week. Our receipts have been exceedingly light this week, and the stock is gradually diminishing.
