As compared with the U. S. Bank in the above, read the fellowing statement of the two late government banks here, according to their returns of last month :NEWWORK BANKS- December, 1837. Cir. & dep Specie. Pro eir. & dep. to Specie 649 998 B'k. of Amer. 2,156,176 $3.53 $1 41,468 Mechanics, 1,399,289 1 88,74 The following is a statement of the comparative liabilities to specie, in the aggregate, of the banks in both cities :Cir. & dep Specie. Pro. cir. & dep. Specie, $1 Tot. N.Y. bks Dc. 1837, 13.847.496 2.373,632 $5,83 3.79 1 Philad. Nov. " 21.510.423 5.598.864 5.29 1 " " not inc. U.S. B. 11,908,788 2,249,014 From these various facts, it will be seen that the proposed mission to Philadelphia, will scarcely turn out so favorably as the onesent on in the spring of last year, before the suspension of speeie payments. Mr. Biddle's policy is altogether different from that of the banks of this city. Whatever may be the morale of the thing, he is decidedly against any resumption of specie payments at present, and will scarcely forego the splendid operations in foreign exchange, to gratity our Wall street financiers, We are not sure but he is right-as a matter of self-defence. As a principle of strict morals and philosophy, a resumption of specie payments ought not to be delayed, but who cares'for morals and philosophy new a days? In the mean time we shall watch the progress of the mission and report progress.Wall street money matters will never prosper, till some great financier, equal to Mr. Biddle, take the reins. I have a grea . mind to seize them myself and show the miserable charlatans of that region, how to drive teams of thick-sculled directors with skill and science. The following are recent bank returns from Alabama and Kentacky. BANK OF KENTUCKY. Decrease. June so, 1837. Nov. 30, 1837. This simple fact shows the dilapidated condition of credit in Alabama. In the meantime, the resumption goes forward slowly. In addition to the account made recently of the Aibany banks we find the fol owing in the New Haven Herald of Tuesday Specie Payments. - The New Haven bank resumed specie payments for all their bills this day. The Mechanics' bank of this city also paysepecies and the City bank bas never suspended. We have no doubt that the Count bank will immediate. ly follow in their footsteps, though we have RO communication from that quarter. All the banks now refuse one and two del.
