We have just learned from a source that cannot be doubted, that the United States Bank of Pennsylvania, and all the banks of the city of Philadelphia and New York have suspended specie payment. What effect this will have on the southern banks is yet to be seen. We are of the opinion that it will not materially change the standing of our banks, if it does it will be for the better. We think it will be of more advantage than disudvantage, as the southern banks have no paper in circulation that is due, and if they have been prudent in their issues, they can meet their liabilities at maturity. Time will tell.
