Gordon Bank Quits Dothan, Ala., Jan. 1-The Bank of Gordon was closed today, not on account of New Year's as were other banks, but a sign on the door announced to the 200 depositors that their $25,000 in the bank on deposit would be returned to them through the First National/Bank at Ashford. J. J. Marsh, president of the bank, who was in Dothan, today said the directors held a meeting last night and decided not to open the bank for the new year as the business of the bank had not been profitable during the last two years and necessary expenses during 1932 would cut farther into the profits and might perhaps have resulted in losses to the depositors. By closing at the end of 1931, expenses of taxes, new charter and other obligations were saved, Mr. Marsh, who has been president of the bank for 16 years, explained. The charter of the bank, which was organized 20 years ago, would have expired this year and securing of the new charter would have entailed considerable expense, Mr. Marsh said. No Run on Bank There was no semblance of a run on the bank, although withdrawals have been steady during the past two years, the president of the financial institution said. Besides paying the depositors of the bank in full, Mr. Marsh said he was confident the stockholders also would be paid.
