CONFESSED BOOTLEGGERS SENTENCED Kuhn Gets Eight Months, Ertl Gets Six-Latter's Sentence Suspended R. J. Kuhn of Dickinson, arrested here in the early morning of June 11 on charges of engaging in the liquor traffic, was sentenced to serve eight months in the Burleigh county 1311 and nay a fine and costs totaling $550 by District Judge Fred Jansonits this morning. Kuhn entered a plea of guilty when arraigned in distriet court a week ago but his sentence was deferred until today. Henry Ertl, arrested with Kuhn. pleaded not guilty when arraigned and a jury was picked yesterday to try the state's case against him. He was also charged with engaging in the liquor traffic. After the state had completed its trase and motions of defense counsel for dismissal and directed verdict had been denied, Ertl withdrew his plea of not guilty and entered a plea of guilty to the charge. He was sentenced to six months in jail and to pay a fine and costs of $250. Sentence was suspended during good behavior. Arrests Followed Raid Kuhn and Ertl were taken into custody by the local police at 3 a. m. last Friday following a raid on an automobile standing on a city street, in which the officers claim to have found about 45 gallons of moonshine. The jury which heard the case of Bernice Speaks vs. school district No. 46 brought in a verdict in favor of the plaintiff, granting her judgment for $260, the full amount asked. Miss Speaks claimed four months' pay as teacher in the district, alleging that she was hired for a seven months' term but discharged after three months. The school board contended that there was no written contract with Miss Speaks and that the board never officially ratified the action of one of its members in engaging the teacher. Jury Disagrees The jury in the $10,000 damage suit of Mrs. Margarette Lattimorelle vs. Harry Schonert was discharged at 10:30 last night after 12 hours' deliberation, during which it was unable to reach an agreement. The case of C. J. Fisk vs. Interstate Transportation company was continued over the term by consent of the counsel. The court today is hearing the case of L. R. Baird, as receiver of the Burleigh County State bank of Wing, vs. Nels Niemie.
