CALIFORNIA ITEMS. The San Francisco Call of yesterday says : John Coner, a truit merchant, doing business on the corner of Clay and Sansome streets, in this city, had a narrow escape from instant death last evening. He left his home at Temescal yesterday afternoon for the purpose of crossing the ferry. He boarded the local train at Broadway street, and did net get off when the end of Long Wharf was reached. The train was just pulling out of the long shed slowly, and he jumped to the plank walk, falling in such a position that his hand lay on the track. The wheel passed over and crushed it. He was removed to the depot on Seventh street, and thence to his residence at Temescal. The Vallejo Chronicle says that the Vallejo Savings and Commercial Bank, after a suspension of some fourteen or fifteen months, will resume business on the first of January. The present management of the bank have paid the depositors already 70 per cent. of their claims, and had more than sufficient assets to pay the balance, but to raise the amount from them now would have required a very great sacrifice. The lady managers of the California State Woman's Hospital have received a generous donation of $500 from Messrs. Flood & O'Brien. This amount comes at the right time, and, with a number of other contributions hoped for at this season from those who know how much suffering is relieved by this institution, it is believed that it will continue its usefulness through the coming year, and for many more. The San Francisco Alta of yesterday says : Frank Cunningham and John Donohue were arrested by the Harbor Police last night, on counter charges of assault with a deadly weapon. They are hackmen, and the affair grew out of their being employed by rival companies. Neither was hurt, although several shots were fired. Hereafter there will be a tri-weekly mail between Aurora and Bodie.
