Have Operations-Mrs. Clarence Parshall and Russell Peters both of Coldwater had major operations at Leila hospital this morning.
Takes New Job-J. W. Baird, 242 Calhoun, left Wednesday for Grand Rapids, where he has taken job as distributor for the Prince Pipe Wrench Co. there. Tonsils Removed-Jackie Thomas age 7, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Thomas, 22 Fairfield, had a tonsilectomy operation, Thursday morning.
Has Whoping Cough-Julia Johnson. 6, is quarantined at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Johnson of 306 Parish, with whooping cough. Improves at Home - Mrs. W R. Anderson 18 Eldredge, who had been ill at Nichols hospital for five days, returned to her home Thursday much improved. Leaves for Vacation-Mrs Gaylord Kline of 60 South avenue. employed at Nichols hospital in the office, started a two weeks' vacation Thursday. Goes to Meeting-Secretary Rudolph Habermann of the Chamber of Commerce is in today and tomorrow for the meeting of Michigan commercial organization secretaries.

Beedon, motored to Homer Thursday where they attended the funeral of Mrs. Priscilla Beedon. an aunt by marriage of Mrs. B. N. Beedon. Dr. Maveety to Speak-Dr. P. J. Maveety will speak on "Foundations" at the religious service to be held in the North Lobby of the Sanitarium Sunday evening at 8 o'clock The song service will begin at 7:40 o'clock. Dr. Maveety's subject is based on Matthew. 7:26: Find Purses Empty-Two purses taken from Orchard avenue home of Miss Evelyn Thrall while she visited in an upstairs room with Miss Ora Wixson of 231 Northeast Capital avenue Wednesday evening. were found Thursday afternoon near Elizabeth street and Sherman road. The money was taken from both of the pocketbooks. Injured in Welker. 37. of Decatur. Ind., was slightly injured last night when the car in which he was riding with his brother. Fred Welker of Ceresco. was wrecked on a road near Ceresco. He was brought to Nichols hospital by Olin Jennings of Ceresco. where a cut on his forehead and an injured left knee was treated. Walter Gage Elected-Walter Gage, of the Gage Printing Co., was reelected secretary and treasurer of the Michigan Photo-Engravers associaton at Lansing Wednesday Andrew G. Werback of Lansing was reelected president. A fair trade code of the photo-engraving industry was drawn up and adopted for submission to the NRA. Advising on Tax-Harold G. McLee was at the Chamber of Commerce today and will be there tomorrow to about filling in sales tax return forms. Mr. McLee a Battle Creek man. is one of the appointed by the state tax administration board and is in a position to transmit official interpretations. Decorating New Quarters-Members of the V. F. W. are cleaning and decorating their new quarters at 100 West Michigan avenue, over DeNooyer's preparatory to the opening activity, Cootie Jamboree, which will be held Wednesday August 9. A refreshment parlor is also being installed. The dance will be under the direction of Glenn Hanna and Harold DePriester. Poem in Pictures Recently Charles Wendell Kirsch of the Kirsch Manufacturing Co. of Sturgis wrote a poem, "What the World Needs," which was widely copied. It has now been made into short motion which is being shown over the Butterfield theater circuit in Michigan and appeared in Battle Creek this week at the Regent theater.
Asks an Examination-Martin Youngs of route five. Emmett township, arrested on a warrant charging embezzlement of clothing from the Ford R. Mahoney store on East Michigan avenue, asked for an examination when arraigned before Justice Shafer Thursday The date of the hearing was set for August 10 and Mr. Young's bond was fixed at $300.
Mrs. Florence Evans of 174 Hubbard laid her pocketbook down on the counter of West Michigan avenue store just for moment yesterday afternoon while she paid a clerk for an article she had purchased. When she reached for it again it was gone and were two boys who were standing directly behind her at the time Police were investigating the matter today. Sales Reports Secret-Michigan retailers have the assurance of James E. Mogan, of Lansing ing director of the state sales tax board. that their reports of gross proceeds, required under the sales tax law, will be held in strict confidence. Tobacco Dealers Meet-Tobacco distributors of Michigan met in Lansing Wednesday and formed state association to join with the National Association of Tobacco Distributors and also adopted a code regarding profits of wholesalers and retailers, which will be submitted to Washington for approval. The code as adopted. calls for a 20 percent profit for retailers and a 10 percent profit on tobacco and a seven percent profit an cigaretts for wholesalers. B. F. Baker. Vets to Open Camp-The Veterans of Foreign Wars Poppy camp will be opened by the department of Michigan at Union lake. off Cooley Lake road about seven miles northwest of Pontiac, Sunday The camp will run for four weeks and will be devoted to needy veterans and children from the ages of 10 to The first two weeks will be devoted to boys, and the Inst two weeks to girls. It expected that from 60 to 75 boys and a like number of girls will be during the camp The camp is operated by a director with five young men from the ages of 18 to 21 as counsellors during the boys period. and five girls of the same ages during the girls period. Past Department Commander Schoeninger is of the committee in charge of the camp. New Road Chief-Appointment of Clarence B. Noble, Kalamazoo, as superintendent of state highways in Kalamazoo county is announced by State Highway Commissioner Murray D. Van Wagoner. He succeeds A. O. Krogh who has held the job since 1930. Mr. Noble's appointment is made effective as of August 15, when he will assume full charge of the county. In the meantime, he is familiarizing himself with its operations. Noble opposed K. D. Wilcox at the last election for the post of supervisor of Kalamazoo township and was defeated. He has been employed at the Rex Paper Co. plant in Kalamazoo for several years is married and has two children Thomas Neville received the appointment of state highway superintendent for Van Buren county.
Bridge Jobs Awarded-Nine bridge contracts approximating $5,000 were awarded this week by the highway committee of the state administrative board The awards included the crossing on M 114 over the Grand Trunk railroad tracks 214 miles east of Grand Rapids. The award was for $13,644 and was made to the R. C. Mahon Co. Detroit. Four of the projects for which awards were made today are in Branch county, and were for structural steel bridge crossing Prairie river 5 miles southwest of Bronson on US-12 to Elkhart Bridge and Iron Co., Elkhart Ind., $1,089. complete structure award on the same bridge to E. C. Nolan & Son Detroit. $9,884 structural steel award on bridge crossing Hog Creek three miles of Quincy to Whitehead & Kales Co. Detroit $1. 256 and award on same bridge to E. C. Nolan & Son. $8,459.
Settles Bank Case-Judge George V. Weimer of the Kalamazoo county circuit court has signed formal decree in the long-contested FultonLeonidas bank case, determining members of the co-partnership which operated the banks before they were closed. accepting terms of settlement made by four of the partners and ordering payment of the stipulated amounts to the bank receiver. Lucien F. Sweet. The decree determines the members of Daniels McKain & Co., by which the banks were operated. to be Charles J. Hudson, Louis J. Oswalt, Guy Hamilton. Charles T. Richardson, and Norman Bardeen, and finds them liable for the operation of the banks and liable to the creditors. Propositions of settlement made by Hamilton and the receiver of the Farmers State Bank of Vicksburg are not approved. under the decree. but the following propositions are accepted Richardson, $1,000: Barwalt, $9.000. It is declared these payments will be accepted in full settlement and satisfaction of the liability toward the banks The provision is made that payments should be made to the receiver in 30 days. but that the time may be extended to not more than six months.
