FINANCIAL. The big textile mills of Rhodes Bros., at Llewelling, Pa., which were shut down last Saturday, were placed in the hands of a receiver yesterday. The cotton market was again wild and panicky, being influenced by Strong cables and bad crop reports; the close was at a net loss of 25 to 32 points. The grain and provision markets were injuriously affected by the badly demoralized stock market in New York; provisions showed material declines. In nearly all lines general trade is unchanged, in some departments lifeless, the hot weather and bad crop reports having had an unfavorable influence. The stock market was unusually active and displayed great weakness; liquidation was the order and the declines were exceptionally heavy. The Ingham County Savings Bank, at Lansing, Mich., did not open its doors for business yesterday; its assets are $285,000, and deposits $144,000.

THEY WANTED "SOUND MONEY." Dreyfus, Kohn & Co., New York, the largest siik importers in this country, have just failed because the 400, 000 sound dollars they couldn't get were lacking to pay their debts. A. G. Elliott & Co., paper manufacturers, Philadelphia, Pa., have as signed. The Columbus Buggy Co., Columbus, Ohio, has failed. Liabilities $900,OCO (sound.) The Emmerson, Fisher Carriage Co., Cincinnati, Ohio, has failed. Liabilities about $370,000 (sound.) The Garden City Foundry Co, CII. cago, Ill, has assigned. Liabilities $20,000 (sound ) A half dozen bank officials at New port, Pa, have been indicted for receiving money on deposit after they knew their bank was insolvent. Moore Bros. Chicago, Ill., owners of the Diamond Match Company, failed last week. The liabilities are $8,000,000, (sound ) The firm were large oper tors on the Stock Exchange in Chicago and the Exchange was closed in consequence of the failure. The American National Bank, New Orleans, has closed on account of dull business via the gold standard. The Johston Steel Works, Loraine, Ohio, closed Thusday. Lack of orders was the cause, and eight hundred met are out of work. The Ingham Savings Bank, Lansing, Mich., failed to open its doors Friday morning. Lack of "sound dollars." C. H. BRIEF BITS OF NEWS. Groton and Howard, S.D., postoffices have been raised to the presidential class. C. H. Fargo & Co., one of the oldest wholesale boot and shoe firms in Chicago, has assigned. Hon. Thomas H. Clark, speaker of the Alabama house, has severed his connection with the Democratic party. Returns from the Choctaw elections insure the election of Green McCurtain as chief of the nation by a good majority. The American National bank of New Orleans failed to open its doors. The board of directors have decided to go into liquidation. The Ingham County Savings bank of Lansing, Mich., has suspended. The assets of the bank are $285,000, mostly in notes and mortgages, and the deposits $144,000. The charter of a branch from Monterey to Matamoras, granted ten years ago to the Mexican National Railway company has been declared forfeited, no work having been done. Maximilliam Wilkon, ex-cashier of the branch bank of the National Bank of Mexico at Meridia, Yucatan, has been declared guilty of embezzling $160,000, and will receive a heavy sentence. Shot a Brakeman. ELDORA, Ia., Aug. 8.-Two strangers shot D. Oxford, a Chicago and Northwestern brakeman at Radcliffe. They were arrested at Union by Deputy Sheriff Rathborn and gave their names as William Elliott and George Gordon of Wisconsin. In their possession was a fine set of drills and other burglar tools, and it is supposed they were intending a raid upon the Union business houses. The men are now in jail here

GENERAL NEWS. / The Lake County Bank, of East Chi cago, has failed. The Hon. Thomas B. Reed of Maine, has been nominated for Congress in his district. Fifteen miners lost their lives in a burning mine at Clarke City, Ill., last Saturday. The Ingham County Savings Bank, of Lansing Michigan, closed its doors last Friday. Three Italian murderers were lynched at Hohnville, La., about 10 o'clock last Saturday night. The Hon. Joseph Sibley says that nothing would please him better than to be Mr. Bryan's running mate. The Democrats of "Silver Dick" Bland's district in Missouri nominated him for Congress by acclamation. Fifteen hundred trouser makers in New York, went on a strike last Friday, throwing 300 women out of employment. Five people were instantly killed and two score dangerously injured in a trolley car wreck at Columbia, Pa., last Sunday night.
