ABEL UNDERWOOD, Chancel. lor within said Circuit, on this 8th day of July, A. D 1857, it is ordered by said Chancellor that nine months from this date be allowed for the creditors and bill-holders of said Bank to present and prove their respective claims against said Bank; and that JOHN B. HUTCHINSON of West Randolph, in the County of Orange and State of Vermont, be appointed Master in Chancery to receive the proof of said several claims, and to adjust and report to said Court the same, with their several and respective nature and amount, and the names and residence of the several and respective holders and owners of the same, together with the facts by him found in respect to all such as shall be contested, with his decision thereon; and that the said Master appoint convenient times and places at which he will attend to the duties of his sald appointment, and give public notice thereof, as well as of this order, as by his commission from said Chancellor he is therein directed; and that all persens or corporations having, holding or owning claims of any description whatsoever, or bills or notes against the said South Royalton Bank, or for the payment of which the said Bank, or its securities, or assets, is, or are liable, who shall not, within the said term of nine months hereinbefore limited, present and prove their said respective claims, bills or notes before the said Master, shall be forever barred and precluded from claiming or receiving any part, share, or dividend of or from the assets, property or securities of said Bank in the hands of, or to be reeeived by the Receiver heretofore appointed by said Chancellor upon the petition of the above entitled petitioners against the said South Royalton Bank, or of or from any and all bonds mortgages, or other securities held by the Treasurer of the State of Vermont, for the security or redemption of the bills or notes of the said Bank. say, was answered by the payment of a million and a half of specie, in the course of a few hours. In this course the banks have by strict constructions of the law, forfeited their charters. In consequence, a proclamation of the Governor convening the Legislation appeared yesterday. It is as follows: Whereas, serious financial revulsion has occurred, resulting in the suspension of specie payments by the banks of this and other States, the failure of many long established commercial houses leading to the destruction of confidence and general embarrassment, threatening to affect disasterously, the credit of the Commonwealth and the great industrial interests of the people and requiring prompt, strict and efficient action to relieve the suffering community.... Therefore, I convene the Legislature to meet on the 6th of October, to adopt such measures as the present exigency requires. PITTSBURGH, Sept. 28. The excitement is subsiding. The Mechanics Bk. suspended to day. Business is paralyzed. All of our banks, except the Pittsburgh have suspended. The Providence Journal of yesterday morning in speaking of the condition of the affairs in that city says: 'There never before were two such weeks as closed upon the business of Providence last saturday Money continues at unmitigated rates although the demand slackens under the impossibility of obtaining discounts There is hardly any cotton in the market, and the manufacturers are working down their stocks, with no disposition to renew them under present circumstances. It is impossible longer to raise money to pay the labor and a dreary winter is before us. Until the news from Philadelphia and Baltimore arrived, there was a hope that the survivors of this week would go on with an easier money market; but these suspensions cut off a third of the collections upon which our banks were relying to meet their own engagements, and to extend relief to their customers. Providence stands now a creditor city but our collections on New York will not much more than ballance the demands upon us from that city, and those farther South are cut off by the suspension It is impossible to tell what the result will be, but it is plain that things cannot remain so much longer ### UNCURRENT BANKS. A little fellow from four to five years old, having perforated the knees of his trowsers, was intensely delighted with a patch his grandmother had applied. He would sit and gaze upon it in a state of remarkable admiration, and in one of these moods suddenly exclaimed: Grandma must put one on t'other knee and one behind, like Edy Smith's " "Let's take a horn," is a phase of frequent utterance. The blast of that horn may be the signal for the porter to open the gate of death. ### FACTS ABOUT THE PRESIDENTS. Four of the first seven were from Virgnia.--Two of the same name from Massachusetts, and the seventh was from Tennesee. All but one were sixty six years old on leaving office, having served two terms and one of them, who had served but one term would have been sixty-six years of age at the end of another. Three of the seven died on the 4th of July, and two of them were on the Sab Committee of Three that drafted the Declaration of Independence, and these two died on the same day and year, and on the Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, aud just half a century from the day of Declaration. The names of three of the seven ended in 'son," yet neither of these transmitted

BOSTON, Oct. 21 -The Suffolk Bank refuses the notes of the South Royalton Bank, Vermont, and necticut. the Uncas and Quinnebang banks, of ConNEW ORLEANS, Oct. 19.-The bank presidents have agreed to still take the certified checks of the Citizens' Bank in payment of debts The Citizens' Bank redeems its circulation, but not the checks of depositors. The banks have lost over two millions of dollars during the run of last suspended. week. Trade in western produce has been nearly Oct. 20 -Money is very stringent. The actual relief afforded by the bank suspension is very slight. Four per cent. a month is offered by first class houses without takers. Sterling exchange is entirely unsaleable Oct. 21.-Financially the day closed glorious yesterday, in exchange there is nothing doing. Many We. kmen have been discharged from our manufacturing establishments. LA PORTE, Oct. 20 -It is said that an arrangement was closed yesterday between the Michigan Southern and Central Railroads, which will have a tendency to prevent a ruinous competition between these two roads.

The notes of the South Royalton Bank must be handed in to the receiver on or before the 7th of April, or they will be shut out from dividends. The brokers are buying them at 70 cents on the dollar. A meeting of the bondholders of the Boston, Concord and Montreal Railroad was held at Boston yesterday, to take measures in aid of extinguishing the floating debt of the Company. Its amount was stated to be $258,000, exclusive of interest, which increases it considerably. The amount subscribed is $234,000, and $35,00 0 more is needed to pay the debt in full. Messrs. William B. Dodge, Hinckley, and E. W. Hutchings were appointed a committee to solicit subscriptions from the bondholders. The value of importations of foreign merchandise at New-Orleans for two years ending Dec. 31, 1856 and 1857, was: 1856. 1857.

I The Woolen Mill in Felchville, belonging to Prosper < Merrill, Esq., together with the machinery, cloths and to stock, was destroyed by fire on Tuesday evening the t t 23d inst. The fire was discovered at about half past 11 o'clock, in the upper part of the building. Cause of the fire unknown. Loss, $12,000; insured for $8,000. At an adjourned meeting of the Montpelier Association, held at Rev. Mr. Lord's, Montpelier, March 16, it was resolved to erase the name of Guy C. Sampson from the roll of that Association, and that he be no longer a member of that body. S. S. Skianer of St. Albans was recently fined $40 and costs for violation of the Liquor law.-A Frenchman named Reno was also fined $30 and costs, having just brought in a quantity of liquor from St. Johns. We learn that the books of the receiver of the South Royalton Bank, will be closed on the 7th of April next, and all bills of the bank not presented previous to that time will not be redeemed. A Lynx was shot by Mr. Rufus Smith, in Swanton, on the 16th inst. It was of unusual size, and though poor in flesh, it weighed twenty-four pounds. These animals are rarely found in our State, yet one was killed, we understand, a few days previous in Highgate. The extensive chair manufactory of Messrs. Burrage Brothers, in Burrageville, Ashburnham, with its contents, together with a large barn containing hay and chair stock, and a blacksmith shop a few rods from the above, were entirely destroyed by fire on Wednesday night of last week. The proprietors estimate their loss at from $8000 to $10,000, on which there is insurance of $2000 only, in the Fitchburg Mutual Co. In consequence of this fire, about 40 men are thrown out of employment, besides a great number of women and children, whose main dependence was seating chairs. The pine forests of Warwick, Mass., have lost their King. A few days since, Messrs. Geo. W. Howlard, and Frederic Putnam cut, on land of Mrs. Merrifield, a white pine tree, which by measure will make when sawed, eight thousand three hundred feet of inch boards. A correspendent asks, what is the milk of human kindness? We presume it means the milk used at hotels on the public tables, after having the cream taken off for private boarders!" The candidates for governor in Rhode Island are two of the wealthiest business men in the state, Alexander Duncan, the democratic candidate, being rated at something over a million dollars, and Elisha Dyer, republican, at about $200,000. John Lamountain, the seronaut, is constructing a mammoth balloon at Orwell, Vt., and will make his first ascension with it at Rutland. He has also engaged to make an ascension at Chicago, on the 4th of July. A pedler calling on an old lady to dispose of some goods, inquired of her if she could tell him of any road on which no pedler had traveled. Yes, I know of one, and the only one, and that's the road to heaven."

-The new Baptist Church edifice was dedicated in Potsdnm, N. Y., on the 4th ult. -The Canadian Legislature adjourned on the 22nd, to the 7th of April. FOREIGN-The news from Europe is a fortnight later, and possesses unusual interest. There is evidently trouble brew. ing between England and France. It is reported that the French ambassador at London has resigned his charge. and the French government appear to be making preparations of a bellicose character. Intelligent Americans in Europe hazard the prediction that the two nations will be at war before the lapse of six months, unless a revolution in France should happen to give Napoleon III. other businoss to OCcupy his time. A revolutionary spirit had manifested itself in France, and numerous arrests had been made. Orsini, the conspirator, and one of his accomplices, had been guillotined. The English Partiament had finally passed the India Loan Bill, which contemplates an expenditure of Β£8,000,000 for the necessities of the East Indian Government. There is later news from India and China. The King of Delhi has been found guilty of treason against the English Government, and sent to the Andaman Islands. -We learn that the books of the receiver of the South Royalion Bank, will be closed on the 7th of April next, and all bills of the bank not presented previous to that time, will not be redeemed. -The dwelling house of Mr. Oliver Tarbell, in Cavendish took fire and come near being burned, on the evening of the 22 ult. -Mr. Alexander N. Hardie, a hatter by trade, forty-seven years of age, having a wife and daughter in Brattleboro' was found dead in bed at his boarding-house in New York, recently. -Gov. Banks has appointed Thursday April 15, for the annual Fast Day in Massachusetts. -Fast Day in New Hamshire, Thursday, April 8. ACCIDNT - Nathan Griswold of Waltham, met with an unlucky fall on Wednesday last, whilst going to Vergennes. The forward wheel of the waggon ran into a deep rut in the road, and Mrs. G. was thrown to the ground her left wrist was broken by the Citizen. INFORMATION WATTED, of Patrick Frawley, aged 19 years, who left Burlington last fall, intending to go to Shelburne or Charlotte. Any information concerning him will be thankfully received by his mother, sister and brother, who have recently arrived from the old country and are anxious to see him or at least to know of his welfare. EXPLOSION-A loud explosion took place Tuesday evening, about ten o'clock, in one of the recitation rooms of the South College, occasioned by the more than com. monly foolish and reckless " practical joke of placing a stick of wood. heavily charged with powder, in the stove, containing fire. The stove was shattered into small fragments, which were blown into the walls and ceiling of the room and through the windows in all directions. No one was injured, and water was applied in season to prevent the building from taking fire.β€” Burlington Free Press. -The Woodstock Age says, "On Saturday last Messrs. Jennings and Carter, of Hartford, passed through this place with eight as fine specimens of Vermont horses of the Morgan breed as are often met with, en route for Nashville, Tenn They had the " Vermont Bay or "Weld Horse," so well known hereabouts as one of the best trotting stallions in the State, and not equalled by more than two or three, two fine stud colts, and five beautiful mares, all of the very best pattern, of the celebrated Morgan horses." ACCIDENT.-Mr. John W. Perkins, while at work in the shop of Mr. Henry T. Marsh, on Friday last, had his two first fingers on his left hand cut off and his thumb badly injured by a grooving machine. The knives of the machine struck a knot and threw the board from beneath his hands.-Standard. SINGULAR CASE.-A friend in Manchester informs us that a man named OATMAN, living in the north part of that town, recently put some unguentum on his cattle; one of them caught cold from its effects. He undertook to cure her by giving her a dose of medicine, and while angaged in foreing it down her throat she bit one of his fingers. Some days after he was taken sick, and complained that

WASHINGTON COUNTY COURT. 7. State vs. James C. Simons. An indictment for subornation of perjury, that the respondent induced Bridget Rohan to swear falsely as to the paternity of a child. The evidence indicated that the respondent had used Bridget for the purpose of levying "black mail," the paternity of the child in this case had been charged upon two persons, while in fact Simons was the father. Plea, not guilty. Verdict of the jury, guilty. Joyce (States Attorney,) and Redfield for the State. Henry and Randall for respondent. On Friday, Oct. 1, the Court sentenced the respondent to 10 years hard labor in the State Prison. 8. Stote vs. Byron Hunt. Information for assault and battery. The respondent was charged with striking Mrs. Andrew Burnham, of East Montpelier, with a stick, and otherwise ill-treating her. Plea, not guilty, and that the blow was struck in self-defence. The jury were divided-eight for the State and four for the respondent. Joyce (State's Attorney) for the State. O. H. Smith for the respondent. 9. State vs. Lewis Wood. An indictment for assault and battery--that Wood caught the wife of Lewis Bedford, of Montpelier, and threw her from the door steps of the house, and broke her collar bone. Plea, not guilty, and that the fall and injury were accidental. Verdict, guilty. Joyce (State's Attorney) for State. Wing and Spalding for respondent. 10. J. R. Dicke vs. John Thompson and trustee. An action of general assumpsit. In this action it was attempted to hold the So. Royalton Bank, the receiver of the Bank and the State Treasurer as trustees of the defendant. Decision with the Court. 11. Truman Perrin vs. Wm. H. Kellogg. An action of ejectment to recover possession of land. The Deft. claimed the land on the ground that he had occupied it more than fifteen years. Jury did not agree. Smith and Redfield for Pitf. Heaton & Reed and Peck for Deft. At the close of the trial, Perrin vs. Kellogg, the jury were discharged and the court adjourned till Tuesday, the 19th inst., at 9 o'clock, A. M., after having admitted to the bar C. J. Gleason and Geo. W. Bailey, Jr., of Montpelier.

# SOUTH ROYALTON NEWS. Miss Susan Lamb has been on the sick list for the past week. Wm. H. Martin and wife attend the Centennial at New York. Thus far April has been a very pleasant month and farmers are commencing their spring's work. Orville Bixby Post have changed their regular meetngs to the Saturday evenings on or before the full moon. Miss Mattie Prentiss of Chelsea, P. Q. is sick at E. Bixby's. She has been attending school at St. Johnsbury for the past year. Mr. Jessie Smith of Pawtucket, R. I. is very sick with pneumonia. He came here a week ago in company with a friend to buy horses. Miss Jessie Couthoui of Chicago will give a recitation at the Cong'l church here Friday evening, Apr. 26th.
