AMERICAN STATE BANKTOMOVETO HEART OF CITY Will Establish Main Office in Former Quarters of the Commercial National INSTITUTION GROWS BY LEAPS AND BOUNDS Began Business in Fairview in 1907 With $20,000 CapitalNow Has Six Branches The wonderful growth of the American State bank, of Detroit, has warranted the establishment of a main banking office in the downtown district. The former offices of the Commercial National bank, in the south half of the Moffat building. are now undergoing the required alterations and will be ready for occupation the middle of the new year. The history of the bank dates from Feb. 1, 1907, when it began business under the name of the Fairview Savings bank, with offices at Jefferson and St. Jean-aves, in what was then the village of Fairview. This bank suocessfully weathered the panic of 1907 and was one of the few that did not demand from its depositors notice of withdrawal of deposits. It had cash to meet all demands. and, what is more, furnished all of the currency for the payrolls of the industries of Fairview during the dark days. This action inspired great confidence in the institution, and when the tide turned in 1908 the bank's deposits increased by leaps and bounds. This growth necessitated new quarters, and in 1909 the handsome banking home at Jefferson and Hillgeraves., was built and occupied.
