CONDENSED TELEGRAMS. THE Scotch Coal, Iron & Railroad Company, backed by ample British capItal, has purchased for immediate devel opment over 250,000 acres of the finest mineral and timber land in West Virginia. THE State Department has taken measures to secure full particulars of the sheeting of Gen. Barrundia on board an American vessel lying in the port of San Jose by officers of the Gautemalan Government. PORTIA, Ark., has shipped 120 car loads of water melons this season. Ir IS authoritatively stated at Louisville, Ky., that the combination in control of the fruit brandy trade will soon advance the price 10 cents a gallon. One dealer has 80,000 gallons waiting for the advance. DURING the past week 6,745 steerage and 2,063 cabin passengers arrived at New York. The same week last year 5,994 steerage and 3,930 cabin passengers landed at that port. For the month of August there were 47,550 and 12,096 cabin passengers; for the corresponding month last year 23,462 steerage and 13,393 cabin passengers. SAMUEL FRANCIS, while walking in the eastern part of Altoona, Pa., on the 31st, was brutally beaten and robbed of a large amount of money by footpads. THE sixteen shot tower companies of the United States have formed a national trust similar to those controlling the manufacture and price of white lead, linseed oil and cotton seed oil, and there is not one shot manufacturing plant left out of the organization. ABOUT 2,500 people gathered at Stuart's Springs, Ark., on the 30th and enjoyed one of the grandest barbecues of the season. Everybody was invited, regardless of color or political creed.
