MAINE MATTERS. The Dover Observer states that Dr.F.S. Holmes, of Foxcroft, was thrown from his carriage. last week, and had his leg badly fractured. Otis Cutler. Esq., has been appointed Appraisor and Assistant Warehouse Clerk, at Portland. John Caslow, who attempted to open liquor shop. for the accommodation of the fifth regiment. had his stock seized on Wednesday. The Portland Advertiser has . machine to fold the papers as they issue from the press. As the copy of the daily, reaching us on Thursday. was printed a week previous. we conclude that the machine is not fully up to time. It is stated that, on application of the Bank Commissioners an injunction has been granted against the Sanford Bank. and Joseph Dane. John H. Goodenow, and Wm. G. Conant appointed Receivers. John Hatch, Esq., Sheriff of Kennebec County. 10 making a movement towards securing a library for the use of the prisoners. The old jail at Augusta is occupied as a military hospital. Dr. Ellie has charge. Alden Moulton, of Greene, who has been at work in Alabama, 21 miles from Mobile, reached home. last week. He escaped with much difficulty. and with the loss of his wages. The gang in which be was at work were ordered to leave in 12 hours. and his employer was flogged for hiring Northern men. When he reached Cairo, he found the man in the United States Army-he having taken position where be could repay the eastigation. Capt. C. L. Moses, of South Carolina, removed to the North, some years since, and married a Saco lady. Traitor Benjamin 19 a relative. and has recently written, offering him position in the Southern Navy, and im. ploring him not to forget his native State, in consequence of marrying a northern woman. The captain returns aspirited letter, spurning both offer and appeal. and signs himself Northern made sailor and Union. ist." The Lewiston companies boast two men in their ranks 6 feet 6 inches in height. One belongs in Bethel, and the other in Franklin County. Prof. Chadbourne, of Bowdoin College, deelines to take charge of the Geological survey of the State. It will interfere too much with his College duties. Dr.E. Holmes, of Winthrop, has been appointed. James G. Blaine, Esq., of Augusta, is a Member of the Board of Visitors to the U. S. Military Academy. at West Point. The Sixth Maine Regiment has been mustered. Five of the companies go into barracks at Bangor. and five at Eastport. We see it stated that Lieut. O. B. How. ard, of Leeds, will be appointed Colonel of the third regiment. He is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy. and has seen considerable service on the Texas frontier. The Oxford North Quarterly Meeting will be held with the Baptist church, in Byron, on the last Saturday and Sunday in June. Rev. Z. Morton has taken charge of the Baptist church at Bryant's Pond.

RELIGIOUS.-Rev. N.M. Williams, of the Baptist Society in this place, left town last Monday morning, to make a short visit to hisfriends in Massachusetts. Rev. R. Cole will occupy Mr. Williams' pulpit during his absence. Rev. Mr. Chase from Pittston, preached in the M. E. Church of this village, on Sunday last, a very interesting and argumentative discourse, from Gal. 11 12. The East Me.Conference M.E. Church commenced its annual session at Cherryfield the 14th inst. Bishop Baker presing. The preachers of this Conference number about one hundred,and nearly all passing through this place on their way to and from Cherryfield.This Conference embraces the territory lying between the Kennebee river and the Province of New Brunswick. There seems to be a good degree of revival interest manifested in many of the Religious Societies in this State. The Bath papers state that thirty persons were admitted into the membership of the Winter Street (Congregational) Church, on Sabbath last, and seven as members of the Elm Street (Baptist) Church. Rev. Mr. Hammond, the revival preacher, is now at Lewiston, where his labors are being rewarded by an increased interest in religious matters on the part of the people of that locality. At Farmington, lately, twenty-four perons were admitted as members of the Congregational Church. In East Machias a deep religious interest is felt. Several additions have recently been made to the Congregational and Baptist Churches A friend, writing from Machias, says " Rev. Mr. St. Clair is holding revival meetings here, and the people, are taking great interest in them. The house of worship is well filled at every meeting. Several of the young folks have come forward and joined the Church, and others are earnestly seeking the way of sulvation. May the good work go on." it Dr T. D. Littlefield, of Waterville, has taken the store on the corner of Main street, opposite C. G. Peck's and opened a fine stock of Silver Plated Goods, Jewelry and Yankee Notions. We are having fine growing weather, and farmers and all others are improving it. Everybody seems to be busy. Mr. Shaw, of the firm of Shaw & Mc. Laughlin, of the Franklin House, Bangor, has assumed charge of the .. Bangor " House. Col. Larabee was obliged to relinquish the house and retire from business on account of ill health. No man ever kept a better house than did the Col. His successor will have something to do to keep up the reputation of this popular house -Rev. Wm. A. Drew has issued a pros pectus of a now paper. fellow says be has got the refusal of his sweetheart to marry him. Mayor Monroe of New Orleans, and the Alderman of the city were arrested and imprisoned. Governor Washburn has nominated Hon Chas. W. Walton of Auburn, Associate Judge of the Supreme Court. The S. Senate has confirmed the President's nomination of Neal Dow as a Brigadier General of Volunteers. -Mr. Lovejoy moved the thanks of the House to General Met lellan and to all other Generals who fight and win battles. -The New York City lawyers are doing less business at the bar than at any former time. -Rev. Nathan Bangs, D. D., whose name has been for more than a half a centery inseparably connected with American Methodism, died in New York on Saturday.
