and with the most pertect satisfaction, that its dividends have been less than many other institutions; so that it has become the chosen depository of the humble possessions of the widow, the orphan and the helpless. The instances have been rare where either Stockholders or Directors have availed themselves of loans from its funds: and that it has almost constantly exhibited, ever since it commence ed its operation, a fixed and permanent ina vested capital, resting undisturbed, as pledge for the prompt redemption of all its obligations. If the managers of the Suffolk Bank expected or hoped that this effort to embarrass the operations of the Worcester Bank would induce or compel the latter corporation to submit to the terms of the great scheme of the Boston allied Banks, that hope and expectation is blasted forever. Still further; if the Directors of the Suffolk Bank are so ignorant human nature as not to know that hostility will generate hostility-that dishonorable assaults will produce determined resistancethey will learn something of it from the fruits of their compulsory legal process, by which they seek to rifle freto the innocent holders of stock in the Worcester Bank the penalty of two per cent. a month.-The forbearance of the allies- in its modern application, a de tested name- will not be purchased by a com pliance with their terms. It will not be sought to pacify them by becoming tributaries to any plan they may adopt; and, more than all, since the Suffolk Bank has sought to break down the Institution at Worcester by basely seizing an advantage which magnanimity only afforded them.* there is not a Stockholder in the corporation who would not denounce the Directors as false to their trust, should they not resist, to the last, every effort which made to drive them from the stand they, have taken. There is a view of this subject--not to be presented as a threat, but naturally occurring to the mind-which may compel the citizens of Boston to deplore the course which their monied institutions are taking. The trade the country is essential to the prosperity of that City. Should it be withdrawn or materially diverted, the wealth of Boston-so much the boast of its inhabitanis-cannot fail suffer; and that solid growth, which has hitherto been both steady and strong, will be at an end. There have long been causes of jealousy, and also of disgust, between the inhabitants of the interior and the metropolis of the State.
