Special to Times-Republican. Shenandoah, Nov. 12.-A special to the Sent.nel from Imogene says: The Citizens' lark was closed Wednesday and On the door was pinned this ominous notice: "W. H. McGargell is out of town and Miss McGargill is ill. The bank will open in the morning and your money will be ready for you. Ed McGargill." What did it mean: Sad to say the bank had failed and the popular cashier, Will McGargill had fled the country never to return. He oad been gambling on the board of trade and getting in deep enough to wreck the bank he was unable to face the situation and had left home and wife and aged parents and gone to no one knows where. He left Saturday Moon saying he was going to Shenandosh, and would return in the or :ning. but he did not return. No one felt any concern about it; he often went away. and his sister Anna runs the bank In his abs nce all rright. Yesterday morning a letter was received from bim admit ng his trouble, and saying he would ne er return and t would be use,ess to reek him, for he could not be found. The shortage is said to be in the neighborhood of $35,000. but his father promptly stepped into the breech and gave notice that every dollar should be paid and he is abundantly able to do so. A most remarkable fact becomes apparent in connection with this sad event. Altho nearly every business man, farmer, and even children. had funds in the bank in large sums or small. there is not the slightest indication of alarm or panic. Such is the confidence they feel in Ed McGargill that every one goes about unconcerned as to any loss they may sustain. The feeling is of sadness, regret, of sorrow for the splendid family over whose happiness a shadow has been cast. The money loss is one of the smallest considerations; their honor and integrity have been affected. They have the sympathy of the entire community. Will McGargill was regarded as a model man, honest, honorable, obliging, he was the friend of everyone, and everyone his friend. He was exceedingly popular among all classes. A few there are who had a better chance of knowing the inside of things, now say that he has been going wrong for about a year. It is Intimated that he had a partner in the business, who will soon appear, and that there are further developments to be made. The writer of this will not believe that Will McGargill is criminally guilty. He has made a sad mistake, took a. daring risk and lost. What of the bank? It will go on, paying every depositor in full, but it will be under different ownership. The bank has been sold to Father Hayes and his associates, Banker Hart and others of Council Bluffs, and the bank is again open. It is not known who the cashier will be. The people here are perfectly calm, satisfied that Mr. McGargill will make everything all right. The new officers will assume the obligations of the bank and pay depositors.
