The Steubenville Boat Race STEUBENVILLE, September 30 -The single seull race between Frank Denmarsh, of Pittsburgh, and John Pedgritt, of Chicago, for $250 a side, three miles, a mile and H half and return, came th about five o'clock to-day. Denimarsh gave Pedgrift thirty yards start and choice of water. At the word "Go" both gotaway in goodstyle, Denmarsh gaining rapidly on Pedgrift. When they had pulled about 400 yards they fouled, but continued over the course, Denmarsh taking the lead, which he maintained until the close, coming in four lengths ahead Time 19:38]. Pedgrift claimed the race a foul, but the referee decided it a draw, which caused general dissatisfac. tion on both sides. The betting was two one on Denmarsh, and large sums staked on the result. A large crowd was in attendance. The time is said to be the best on record. Sale of Grant's Blooded Stock ST. LOUIS, September 30. The sale of President Grant's blooded stock took place at his farm, ten miles from this city, to day, according to the advertise ments. The day was not very propitious and the attendance slim. The stock went at exceedingly low figures. Young Hambleton, seven years old, stallion, was knocked down for $300; a fine double team sold for $680, and was bid in for the President; the trotting mare Bessie Knox, for which the President paid $1,000, brought $200; another trotting mare, the Belle of St. Joe, bid in for General Grant for $1000; the mare Vicksburg, ridden by General Grant at Vicksburg, was knocked down for $56; about a dozen breed mares, mostly thoroughbreds, sold at from $45 to $85; the thoroughbred mare Flora, 4 years old, at $135; Frolic, a well bred yearling brought $262. A number of mules, work horses, a quantity of crops, agriculin all fact iural imprements, of the working machinery, will berented hereafter, General Grant having decided to make such disposition of the property ratner than run it on his own account The aggregate proceeds not known to night, but are very small considering the real value of the property sold. The mare Lady Morgan,one of the team the President paid $1,500 brought only $42.50; the stallion Graymore formerly known as Peace Maker, was knocked down for $2,500. It is understood he was bid in for Gen. Grant. The Fail River Strike. FALL RIVER September 30 About three thousand persons attended the operatives mass meeting in the park this afternoon. Rev. Jesse H. Jones spoke, counseling patience on the part of the operatives, assuring them that their cause was a righteous one, and must prevail. statement, embodying the agrievances of the operatives, was read and unreadable mously adopted. It proposed an arbitration for the settlement of all the pending difficulties. The following proposition was submitted, to take the place of the agreement proposed by the mill-owners: "Having accepted the rate of wages, we agree not to break our engagement at the command of others, except we choose to and we will seek for the abandon= ment of all violent and coercive measures on the part of any operative or party of operatives in deciding matters between us and our employees. BOSTON, September 30.-- large crowd attended the great staltion race at BenPark to-day, between Smuggler and Thomas con Jefferson for a purse of $2,000 and the championship.
