Real Pioneer Hardships Are Recalled by Lake Park Woman Mrs. Christina Lee, 91, Has Been in Iowa 87 Years By Mrs. Edward J. Addy (Special Correspondent to The Journal) AKE PARK. -Recitals of the experiences and trials of the 80s, within the memory of Mrs. Christina Lee, who recently celebrated her 91st birthday here. put to shame modern singers of the "depression blues. As an example of "treats" af forded children of those days, Mrs Lee tells of one given to herself arm's length the entire distance man of the family who, the dead of winter, rode horseback eight miles into Burlington. carrying at arms length the entire distance sack of eggs. Eggs were at that time the only medium of exchange and having cents credit the man purchased an apple, which the long remembered treat. The apple was carefu cut into seven pieces. Children went barefoot to church and Sunday chool in those days and overshoes were unheard of Mrs. Lee has owned. but two pair of overshoes in her 91 years. Food consisted mainly of cornmeal. beans and pork, with white bread on Sundays. Clothing was denim, calico and hand cloth. Thread sew with was spun from raw flax and wool for stockings was spun and knitted. Many families lived log houses and schools were few and far between. Born in Germany. Mrs. Lee came helped call the authorities and hold the men until he arrived. The two were held in the Clay county jail overnight and taken be fore Judge George Heald at Emmetsburg day. Tuesday, where they pleaded guilty and were sentenced. Stedwell and his son, Frank. who were killed when their touring truck was struck by an eastbound Illinois Central train. They had been visiting relatives here, and planned to go south for the winter. The Stedwell family were residents of Storm Lake until 12 years ago, when they moved to Colorado. The elder Mr. Stedwell is survived by son and daughter. The younger Mr Stedwell leaves widow. YOUTHS AND GIRLS HELD FOR ROBBERY OF STORE sen Co., whose at Hanover, was recently robbed, has recovered most of the merchandise that was taken, and the sheriffs of Buena Vista and Cherokee county apprehended youths and two girls in a partially furnished house in Cherokee county. The young men and girls were staging party in the house when taken by the officers. $10,000 BROKEN LEG SUIT WON BY IOWA DOCTOR ters Wednesday ordered a directed verdict for Dr. R. M. Sorensen. of Cumberland, in suit for $10,000 brought against him by Paul Hatr a minor, through his father. David Hair, rural mail carrier of Cumberland. Dr. Sorensen was charged with negligence in setting the boy's leg. which was broken in May, 1930. Thieves Batter Safe Dial Alta, Ia.-Special: While trying to enter the safe in the Standard Oil 2 for 26c filling station here, thieves battered off the dial and then couldn't open 2 for 51c the door, and neither could the station attendant when he came to work, and the door had to be drilled 2 for 6c off before the contents could be reached. The station attendant was 2 for 36c held up by three youths about year ago in hte same station, and all his money taken. Injuries/ Result In Death Storm Lake, Ia.-Special: J. E. Seaton, a resident of Storm Lake and Buena Vista county for the past 52 years, died at his home here 2 for at the age of 72. Recently he suffered paralytic stroke while walking up town, and fell on the railroad tracks and received injuries which resulted in his death. He leaves widow, two daughters and one son. Drunken Driver In Jail Spencer, Ia.-Special: John Ehrends of Everly, wanted since last summer on charges of driving while intoxicated, was arrested and taken before Judge George A. Heald at Emmetsburg, where he pleaded guilty fall. to America when 3 years old and fully 87 years of her life has been spent in Iowa, near Burlington and in Taylor county She was the mother of nine children The woman is very active and youthful ap. pearing and her favorite pastime making quilts, the number of which she has made in her lifetime it is impossible to estimate. She recalls having pieced 20 in one year alone Mrs. Lee has for many years made her home with her daughter Mrs. Zay McCluge. and was sentenced to six months in the Clay county jail.
