Description

Contemporary articles (Sept–Oct 1857) list Tippecanoe Bank's bills as thrown out / discredited. By Feb 1858 the Auditor had sold the bank's securities to redeem notes and only $1,000 remained, and the article says the bottom has fallen out of this concern, indicating insolvency and permanent closure rather than a temporary suspension and reopening. The bank was a Free Bank (state-chartered), so classified as state. Dates are taken from articles reporting notes thrown out (late Sept 1857) and subsequent listings of the bank as suspended/discredited in October 1857; Auditor comments are from Feb 1858.

The securities in the Auditor's office have all been sold, and their proceeds applied, with the exception of $1,000 still in the Auditor's hands, to the redemption of the outstanding circulation of the Bank. The bottom has fallen out of this concern. ... there is more of a circulation out than there are securities to redeem it. (Auditor's statement on Tippecanoe Bank).

Another Bank Panic! The failure of the Gramercy Bank, Lafayette, and the Shawnee Bank, Attica, under circumstances that reveal fraud, on the part of their owners, if not also corruption on the part of the Auditor of State, has caused another panic in regard to the Free Banks of Indiana and Illinois. No wonder. If these, which sustained the shock of two years ago, go down, what confidence can the public put in any of them? Alluding to the panic in Cincinnati, the Gazette of Monday says: "The notes of the following Indiana Banks were thrown out on Saturday :Central and Farmers' & Mechanics' Bank of Indianapolis; Tippecanoe Bank at Logansport; and Brookville Bank at Brookville. The latter Bank, however, was by some considered good, and some of the houses continued to receive the paper at par. It is owned and managed, we are informed, by good and responsible men.Of the Illinois Banks, the notes of the following were thrown:-State Stock Security Bank at Danville; People's Bank at Carmi; Prairie State Bank at Washington; Rushville Bank at Rushville; Agricultural Bank at Marion; Central Bank at Peoria. The Bank of the Capitol at Indianapolis, the Exchange Bank at Greencastle, Ind., and the Farmers's & Traders' Bank at Charleston, III., are received with distrust. What this excitement will lead to, it is difficult to say." We wish it would lead to an abandonment of the new-fangled patent-Democracy system of banking without capital. If the present Legislature does not do something to protect the people from the flood of spotted paper, called money, we wish they would go into "joint convention" in the penitentiary for two years, and let the people elect Legislators who would do some good.

The Indiana and Illinois Free Banks The Cincinnati Gazette says: The failure of the Gramercy and Shawnee Banks of Indiana, have caused a great deal of confusion among our money dealers with reference to the Free Banks of Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin, all of which, just now, are looked upon with suspicion. The notes of the following Indiana Banks were thrown out to-day: Central and Farmers & Mechanics' Banks of Indianapolis; Tippecanoe Bank, Loganport; and Brookville Bank, Brookville. The latter bank, however, was by some considered good, and some of the houses continued to receive its notes at par. It is owned and managed, we are informed, by good and responsible men. Of the Illinois Banks, the notes of the following were thrown out: State Stock security Bank at Danville; People's Bank at Carmi; Prairie State Bank at Washington: Rushville Bank at Rushville; Agricultural Bank at Marion; Central Bank at Peoria. The Bank of the Capitol at Indianapolis, the Exchange Bank at Greencastle, Ind., and the Farmers' and Traders' Bank at Charleston, Ili., are received with distrust. What this excitement will lead to it is difficult to say. All the Free Banks will sustain a heavy run, but those that intend to comply with the new law and continue business will probably be able to sustain their credit. The chief cause of all this trouble lies in the fact that the owners of the Gramercy and Shawnee Banks withdrew their bonds from the Auditor of State prior to their failure leaving nothing in the hands of the State officer to redeem their circulation.

which are watched in the night time. The gates are so narrow that only one vehicle can pass through at once. " Destroying Angels" go out in the plains in the Spring, in order to intercept those who may escape from the city. Many left on foot last January. They sleep by day and travel by night. I know of men and women who have travelled this way-the men I dressed as women, and the women as men. came across some who were very short of food the little they had they gave to the women, and the men were principally sustained by the women's milk! $ I left Salt Lake city on the 17th of April, in company with two Welchman and an African. The few Mormons who knew of our intentions said that we would never reach the States alive, but 1 told them that I was determined to try, whatever would occur. Saturday (the day after we left,) we had travelled thirty miles from the city, when we saw three men following us. They were sent by the authorities of the city to catch us. The name of one was Patrick Linch, an Irishman by birth, and Secretary to Brigham Young. This man fired his revolver at me. They then came near us on their horses and inquired our names, and we refused to tell them, they swore that they would blow " our damned brains out." With that, one of them raised his revolver as if he was going to use it-he had one each side of his saddle. 1 then took revolver and told him to fire if he liked. Thad six revolvers with me, and a ritle containing in all thirty-seven balls. Another ball was then fired at me, which whistled by my left check. I then fired at him, and one ball hit him on the leg and another on the shoulder. (My friends by this time had run into the woods, and I was left to fight it out myself.) I then lost my ing, and ORE of the men ran at me with a knite and cut my belt and took four of my revolvers. I had the other two hid in my boots. I got hold of one of them and fired, and succeeded in keeping them off for some time, till I had a chance to run to the woods, where 1 got the assistance of my friends. We continued to travel that day and the following night, and succeeded in reaching a place called Fort Briger, which is 118 miles from the valley. The number of our pursuers had now increased to twenty, and we had to put to the woods again. We travelled till night and were SO fortunate asto meet a host of friendly Indians, who gave us buffalo meat to eat. The next day we overtook a number of wagons, known as Mrs. Babbit's train, in number twenty-eight. I was hired to drive one wagon which was drawn by six mules, We had some trouble with a lot of Indians called the " Cow Tribe." They were all armed and about a thousand strong. About six hundred shots came into our tents. We killed about thirty Indians, and they killed five of our men. We arrived here on the 13th of June with merry hearts, and we were received with good welcome by the people of Florence. I went to see my father's grave. I thank God that it is where it is. I left mother with Jane, Louisa, Mary and John in good health. So was Mr. Thomas too. 1-is a thorough Mormon, and I am sorry to say that he did his best to kill me-thinking that better than to let me escape to spread his character abroad-none of them would believe that I could reach this place alive. I am very desirous for my mother and children to leave Salt Lake and join me here. If they could do that 1 would buy some land I here, which I could have at $1.25 per acre. left $500 worth with my mother till she could see a chance to escape. My work here is looking after a brickyard. I get $30 a besides my board. From your loving br JoHN DAY SUSPENSION AT DUBUQUE Buffalo, The suspension of Heron thers, bankers, at Dubuque, is announced, with liabilities for $100,000. Their assets, however, are said to be double that sum. THE TIPPECANOE BANK Indianapo 29.-The bills of the Tippecanoe Bank, located at Logansport, are thrown out by the brokers here. St. Louis, Sept. 28.-P. M.-The bankers, upon whom runs were made this morning, freely and promptly met all their checks. Confidence has been restored, and the excitement almost entirely subsided. The immediate cause of the suspension of Messrs. Bogg, Miltenberger & Co., was the non-arrival of coin in transit. It is probable they will re-open to-morrow. The assets of Anderson & Co., and Daily & Barksdale largely exceed their liabilities. The presumption is they will resume business in a very short time. THE BANKS OF GEORGETOWN, D. C.-Washington, Sept. 29.- The Bank of Georgetown, which continued to redeem its issue in specie, has come into the arrangement of the other banks of the District, and suspended specie payments altogether. The Farmer's and Me. chaqies' Bank, and the Bank of Commerce, or Georgetown have also suspended. None of the banking houses have the demands against them, except the suspended house of Pairo & Nourse. THE VIRGINIA Banks.-Norfolk, Sept, 29.-All the banks of this city continue firm. Rachmond, Va., Sept. 29.-There Is but a moderate demand made on our banks. So far, the Directors express confidence of their ability to meetany demand which may be brought. Has the capital stock of the Branch at this place been assessed by our corpora- tion assessor? ### THE NEW YORK FREEMAN'S JOURNAL The New York Freeman's Journal, a Catholic organ, is very indignant at Ex-Gov. Wright, for the speech he made at the Evangelical Conference at Berlin, and very truthfully remarks: "It strange- ly becomes Mr. Wright to join in a sectarian cru- sade, or rather tirade, against 'Romanism, Formal- ism, Socianism, indifferantism and infidelity,' when it is so certain that, except for the masses grouped un- der these heals, the number of votes polled for Mr. Bu- chanan, in all the Northern States together, could have been carried home in the crown of a hat: and Mr. Wright would have had to seek some means of private enterprise to earn his bread, instead of being our Minister to Berlin." Every one of the Grand Jurors of the U. S. District Court now in session at Indianapolis, are Demo- crats. How long can republican in stitutions under such rulers as we now have? Col. Sumner's trial, before a Court Martial, was in progress at Leavenworth, on the 19th ult. Harney could not sit as a member on the trial. Non-paying subscribers are thus talked to by a Southern editor:- "Wagons cannot run without wheels-boats without steam-bullfrogs jump with- out legs, or newspaper be carried on everlastingly without money, no more than a dog can wag his tail when he has none. Our subscribers are all good, but what good does a man's goodness do when it don't do you any good? We have no doubt ev- ery one thinks that all have paid but him, and as we are a clever fellow, and his is a little matter, it will make no difference. Hon James L. Worden is spoken of as a candi- date for nomination for Supreme Judge by the Dem- ocratic 8th of January Convention. The Auditor of State is disposing of the securi- ties of the Tippecanoe Bank. The expenses of the Cincinnati Fire Department for the past six months, amount to $62,000. The thermometer at Peru on the 25th ult., indi- cated 7 deg. below zero. About as cold as it was here. Two runaway slaves were captured in Cleveland, on Monday last, but one of them subsequently es- caped. The affair created quite an excitement. Bills for the relief of the railroads, and providing for the payment of the interest on the state debt of Missouri have passed both branches of the legisla- ture of that State. The New York Tract Society has issued a tract entitled "Sambo and Toney." It is a dialogue to teach the scripture duties of servants. The Socie- ty refuses to do anything towards tea ching the scriptural duties of masters. From the Indianapolis Journal. The Indiana Free Banks. Below we publish the statement of the Audito of State in reference to the condition of the Free Banks of Indiana, with the exception of Tippecanoe Bank of Loganspo-t-which is not mentioned in the statement. The bottom has fallen out of this concern. The securities in the Auditor's office have all been sold, and their proceeds applied, with the exception of $1,000 still in the Auditor's hands, to the redemption of the outstanding circulation of the Bank. There appears to have been "something rotten in Denmark "in the ment of the affairs of the Tippecanoe Bank. The Auditor's books showed so much outstanding circulation an securities equal in amount to the circulation with 10 per cent. in excess. There must have been an over issue of notes, or failure to destroy the notes as redeemed. As matters are now, there is more of a circulation out than there are securities to redeem it. The books show nothing wrong on the part of the present managers of the Auditor's office. The error lies deeper, and runs back to past years. There have be en surmises of this state of things for some time, but nothing definitely has been ar rived at until the present time. The $1,000 in the hunds of the Auditor will be applied in predemption as long as it lasts, so the "first come" will be "first served." INDIANA REE BANKS. The following banks have complied with the amended law of 1855, and have securities deposited with the Treasurer of State, at their market value, to an amount not less than fifty thousand dollars, and ten per cent. in excess of their cireulation.
