BANK IS CLOSED AFTER SUICIDE OF PRESIDENT

GILLETTE, Wyo., March 12.—The Bank of Gillette was closed today at the request of its directors, pending examination by a state banking examiner. The action followed the suicide here Friday of Mark H. Shields, president of the bank and mayor of Gillette.

To Avoid Receivership SHERIDAN-An effort will be made by directors of the Bank of GIIlette to reorganize that institution, R. El McNally, Sheridan attorney, reported upon his return from a business trip to the Campbell county seat. A conference is being planned with Judge H. P. Ilsley of the seventh Judicial district by the bank's directors and it is believed, Mr. McNally reports. that no receiver for the closed bank will be chosen if a reorganization can be brought about, Huge shortages are alleged to have been found in the bank's books by state examiners who were called to Gillette following the suicide a week ago of Mark H. Shields, president of the bank.

Find Bank Shortage Following Suicide

Gillette, Wyo., March 16.—A shortage in accounts in the Bank of Gillette, the amount of which has not yet been determined, but which, it is said, will prove to be large, has been discovered, following the suicide here of Mark H. Shields, president of the bank and mayor of Gillette.

Notes for large sums are on record but are disclaimed by prominent men, who state the signatures are not genuine, it is declared.

$200,000 SHORTAGE IN WYOMING BANK

Affairs of Gillette, Wyo., Institution Being Checked by State Official.

Gillette, Wyo., March 22.—A shortage of $200,000 in the accounts of the bank of Gillette was disclosed Thursday as the result of an investigation of the institution's books by the state bank examiner, it was announced Thursday. The bank has been closed since March 9, when Mark Shields, president, committed suicide.

The shortage may reach $250,000 when all the accounts have been checked, according to Byron Huie, state bank examiner. A shortage of $96,000 has been discovered in cash accounts, he stated. This had been covered up, said Mr. Huie, by means of charges to correspondent banks on items which had not been credited.

Gillette, Wyo., March 22.—A shortage of $200,000 in the accounts of the bank of Gillette was disclosed Thursday as the result of an investigation of the institution's books by the state bank examiner, it was announced Thursday. The bank has been closed since March 9, when Mark Shields, president, committed suicide.

The shortage may reach $250,000 when all the accounts have been checked, according to Byron Huie, state bank examiner. A shortage of $96,000 has been discovered in cash accounts, he stated. This had been covered up, said Mr. Huie, by means of charges to correspondent banks on items which had not been credited.

Fake notes amounting to $100,000 also were discovered, Mr. Huie asserted, while $11,000 in Liberty bonds belonging to customers of the bank are missing from safety deposit vaults, he added.

The investigation disclosed that $100,000 belonging to the bank was used by Mr. Shields to develop a mine which he owned, according to the state bank examiner. The shortage has been accumulating for a number of years, Mr. Huie said.

HUIE, STATE EXAMINER, COMMENDED BY GILLETTE PEOPLE Byron S. Hule, Casper man appointed as state bank examiner by Governor Ross the first of the year, is proving very popular as a public official. The Gillette News, in the following editorial, commends his work in straightening out the affairs of the Bank of Gillette following the suicide of its president, Mark Shields. "For the last three weeks we have had in our midst Byron S. Hule, state bank examiner, who is adjusting and settling up the affairs of the Bank of Gillette. "As an example of efficiency in public office, Mr. Hule is to be commended. He had the difficult task of taking up the work of looking into the conditions of a bank that had suffered a great calamity and without having to aid him the one person who could have been of the mot assist. ance in the work-the late president of the instituion. "Insead of closing the bank and placing It in the hands of a receiver. Mr. Hule and his able assistants went to work to find ways by which receivership could be avoided and the best interests of the public conserved. The meeting of depositors last Saturday and the decision to re-organize was the result. "Mr. Hule is going about the work of putting the bank on its feet as faithfully as if the business were his own. He is extending to stockholders and depositors every courtesy and every service that is possible. His assistance to the people of Campbell county is appreciated, and the splendid work he is doing is but another evidence of the wisdom and care ex. ercised by Governor William B. Ross in choosing men to assist him in the work of looking after the welfare of the people of the state.

ASK REVIEW OF CASE ON RAILWAY TAXATION

Helena, April 14.—Motion for a rehearing of the appealed action from Sanders county, on which the state supremecourt, which held that railroad "ties" should be assessed as "supplies" and given a valuation of 30 per cent of their value, was filed with the court Friday by the state board of equalization.

The board contends that ties should be assessed at 40 per cent as "railroad property". The Northern Pacific appealed from a ruling to this effect by the district court at Columbia Falls which upheld the Sanders county assessor.

SET DATE FOR ANNUAL ENCAMPMENT OF GIRLS

Glasgow, April 14.—The third annual girl's camp will be held in Glasgow, June 4 to 9. One hundred girls will be chosen to attend this camp as delegates of their community.

Miss Gertrude Erickson of the farm bureau and Ruth Devney, representing Valley county chapter of the Red Cross, will be in charge and will be assisted by the Glasgow Woman's club.

BANKER IS CLEARED

Sheridan, Wyo., April 14.—Hugh B. Shields, former cashier of the Bank of Gillette, at Gillette, Wyo., near here, was freed from charges of embezzlement in a preliminary court hearing Saturday. The case grew out of the closing of the bank after Mark Shields, its president, and brother of Hugh, committed suicide on March 9. Bank examiners found a shortage of more than 200,000 in the bank funds.

Bank Fate in Balance GILLETTE, Wyo., May 17.-The Bank of Gillette will resume business providing the companies that are involved agree to leave their money in the bank on satisfactory terms. This statement was made by Byron S. Hule, state bank examiner, prior to his departure for Denver where he will consult with the two bonding companies that are interested. One of the companies made good the loss to Campbell county, amounting to $40,000, and the other adjusted the losses of the schools, amounting to $20,000, EL total of $60,000 in all. Nearly 10 per cent of the depositors in the bank have agreed to leave their money in the institution. This makes re-organization assured, provided the bonding companies are willing. If the trip of Mr. Hule is satisfactory the bank will re-open within a short time; if not, then a receiver will have to be appointed.
