Description

Multiple contemporaneous newspaper dispatches (May 12–13, 1893) report the Farmers & Merchants (State) Bank of Geneva, Ind., 'closed its doors at noon' or 'suspended to-day at noon.' The suspension is repeatedly attributed to its connection with the failure of the Columbia (Columbian) National Bank of Chicago. No article in the set describes a subsequent reopening; contemporaneous coverage treats it as one of the small banks carried down by the Chicago failure, so I classify it as suspension leading to closure. There is no explicit mention in these clippings of a receiver being appointed for this specific Geneva bank, but the broader context implies permanent failure.
