Over Half Million Bank Assets Sold For $10,900

An auction conducted for the sale of the assets of the closed West Orange Trust Company, conducted by a representative of the state banking and insurance department, brought in total offers of $10,900 for securities having a book value of $521,899, a severe disappointment for the bank's depositors.

An indication of the value which was placed by bidders on notes is shown by the fact that a note of Judge Walter D. Van Riper, president of the bank when it closed, the face value of which was $10,196, brought a bid of $55. Two notes for John R. Rogers, former collector of internal revenue, one for $2,438 and the other for $1,000, brought bids of $5 each.

The results of this sale would seem to show that liquidation of banks has little promise for depositors.
