Manchester, N. H., Oct. 15-AP)State officials and Manchester clergymen joined today to stop heavy withdrawals on the Amoskeag Savings Bank. Standing on the steps of the bank the speakers exhorted a crowd of 500 persons, most of them depositors, to go home and refrain from drawing their savings. A rumor which was spread through the foreign quarter of the city Wednesday that the bank was to be closed led to the heavy withdrawals today. As the crowd increased Bank Commissioner Willard D. Rand and Insurance Commissioner Joseph Sullivan hurried from Concord. Three Roman Catholic priests Fathers John E. Finen. A. J. Leclair and A. P. Doire, and the Rev. Wallace Henderson of the First Congregationalist Church, joined the state officials at the bank. Part of the crowd jammed the banking quarters and the remainder stood outside. The crowd was orderly although large detail of police was on hand. As the run continued Sullivan and Rand addressed the crowd and told them their deposits were in no danger and the bank was able to pay off all those who so desired. The elergymen then appealed to the crowd to go home. The crowd cheered each speaker and there was a noticeable dwindling after the speeches. From Concord, Gov. John G. Winant and Rand issued formal statements that the Bank was sound and any rumors to the contrary were untrue. The bank claims to be the largest savings bank in New England north of Boston. It has 33,000 depositors. assets of $35,000,000 and a surplus of $10,000,000.
