BUSINESS EMBARRASSMENTS. Bradstreet's Report of Failures During the Past Week. There were 345 failures in the United States reported to Bradstreet's during the past week, 63 more than the preceding week, 3 more than corresponding week of 1883, and 142 more than the same week of 1881. The total exceeds the record for any one week during the past five years. About 69 per cent. were those of small traders whose capital was less than $5,000. Compared with the preceding week the Middle States had 67, an increase of 2; New England States 46, an increase of 8; Southern States 85, an increase of 5; Western States 109, an increase of 16; Pacific States and Territories 38, an increase of 32. Canada had 39, an increase of 12. The important failures reported were M. Wolff & Co., wholesale hats, and B. R. Smith, cotton commission, New York city; Buckley & Co., dry goods, Utica, N. Y.; M. Waterman & Co., commission merchants, and E. Detrick & Co., bag manufacturers, San Francisco; William E. Phelps & Co., coal and foundry, Elmwood, Ill.; the Union County Bank, at Richwood. Ohio, and Kenner & Moore, bankers, at Morris, Minn. In the principal trades they were as follows: General stores 65; grocers 41; clothing 24; hardware and agricultural implements 20; shoes 19; dry goods 18; liquors 17; produce and provisions 13; stationers, printers, paper, etc., 11; manufacturers 8; hotels and restaurants 8; fancy goods 8; bakers and confectioners 7; coal and wood 5; carpenters and builders 4; furniture 4; hats 4; lumber 4; jewelry 4; plumbers 3; millinery 3; harness 3; grain and flour 3; drugs 3; commission 3; banks and bankers 3; men's furnishing goods 2. Chestnut Gap.-James H. Beard, distiller, has failed and sold out. Cuthbert.-H. B. Mathews, general store, has assigned. Flowery Branch.-P. I. Hudson, grocer, is reported to have left town. Fort Valley.-J. V. Hobbs, hotel, has been closed by the Sheriff. McDonough.-Hightower & Glass, general store, have been closed by the Sheriff. Raytoron.-G. W. Overton, general store, has assigned to Edward Crooke. Liabilities about $1,200; assets about the same. Thomson.-Solomon Sarling, general store, has assigned, Liabilities about $10,000; nominal assets $14,000; preferences $4,400. Whitesburg.-Craig & Brother, liquors, have been attached. SOUTH CAROLINA.
