TOWN TALK. J. Barth is going up higher-from 14 to 56 Monroe street. W. Albert Scott is doing duty as a juryman in the Circuit Court. The skating was excellent last evening on some of the sidewalks. If you haven't paid your taxes don't forgΓ©t to remember that they must be paid this month. The time for filing notices of trial for the March term of the Circuit Court expires tomorrow. The Police Department was paid off yesterday and the officers now twirl their "billies" more joyfully. The Detroit Free Press calls "The Wages of Sin" one of the best and most sensible melo-dramas ever imported. A horse owned and driven by Otto Bylsma, a rag peddler, was yesterday condemned by the agent of the S. P.C.A. Society. At the West Side Rink last night, Miltey Luttenton, an eight year old boy, gave a very creditable exhibition on the rollers. Charles Hamlin, of the Times, went to Coldwater yesterday. He was deputized to take three children to the State Public School. The Detroit papers are very generous in their praises of "The Wages of Sin," which play is to be presented at Powers's Opera House to night and to morrow night. "Washington, or True Greatness" will be the subject of Rev.Mr.Fluhrer's lecture next Sunday evening. The lecture on Wesley and Methodism will be referred one week. Nelson Woods, who was arrested for stealing an overcoat, buffalo robe and other articles from the Bridge Street House, will board at the Ionia House of Correction until it is time to plant corn. There is a demand for a roller rink in the northern part of the city, and Messrs. Fred. J. Provin and N. A. Cushing expect to build one on Plainfield avenue. They were negotiating for a site yesterday. The free singing-school for young men will be opened at the Y. M. C. A. rooms tomorrow evening at 7:30 o'clock. Prof. Shepard will be the instructor, and a general invitation to attend is given. At a very pleasant euehre party given by Mr. and Mrs. Morris Seely last evening. Mrs. J. H. Burrows secured the best prize and Mrs. Tom Hagart and Mrs. John Rowson were the lucky "booby couple." The Central W. .C.T. Union will hold its next monthly meeting on Friday evening, the 20th, nt Mrs. C. D. Hodges, 172 Barclay street. The ladies of the Union will bring refreshments, and all are cordially invited. Samuel E. Andrus, Aaron Norton, Henry W. McBryer, James S. Toland, Edward Farnham, Wm. H. Prescott and Charles E. Hogadone obtained their commissions as Notaries Public from. the County Clerk's office yesterday. A farmer who brought a load of wood to the city yesterday said that he had drawn it thirteen miles, and had "tipped over" three times. When he got here he was offered $1.50 for the load, and finally sold it for "thirteen shillin'." The thermometer rose at the average rate of 5Β° an hour from 8 a. m. until 1 p. m. yesterday-from go below to 16Β° above. A continued increase at that rate for twentyfour hours would have put a stop to complaints about cold weather. There will be a special meeting of the W. C. Union of Unions at the Y. M. C. A. rooms to-morrow at p. in. Each Union is requested to send two delegates. Important business is to be transacted. Members of the W. S. A, are invited to be present. This evening at the residence of William Shackelton, 249 Turner street, the Ladies' Aid Society of the Second Street M. E Church will give a social. very interesting entertainment will be provided, consisting of views on canvas, and music. All are invited. At the Dairymen's Convention, to be held in this city next Wednesday, D. B. Squibbs, an extensive produce dealer at Muskegon. will present a paper on the advantages of putting butter in more attractive packages in order in a measure to head off competition from bogus butter. The assumpsit case in the Superior Court of the Grand Rapids National Bank against Robert Cutler as principal defendant, and the Old National Bank as garnishee defend ant, came to a close yesterday, judgment being rendered for plaintiff against garnishee defendant for $384.14. An order and judgment upon disclosure and appointment Frederic Baars as receiver was made.
