LONDON VISITED BY DENSE FOGS
Seven Persons Meet Death In Accidents-Traffic Blocked
LONDON, Dec. 23 (AP) Opaque fog. thickened by soot and smoke from London's soft coal burning factories, pressed down on the city and southern England again today, hampering communications and slowing shipping In adjacent waters to almost complete stoppage. Veterans recalled the fogs of 30 years ago, before the softeoal nuisance had become so pronouneed as being the only conditions of recent time which might be compared with conditions in southern England during the past few years. The greatest tie-up of rail, high way, air and water transportation in the memory of the younger generation has resulted the heavy evil smelling mists, and the postal service. as a consequence. has been totally unable to cope with the Christmas parcel rush. People leaving business late yesterday evening found no means of reaching their suburban homes, with trains and'omnibus lines suspended or the services greatly curtailed. Railroad terminals and stations were crowded with people with places to go but no way to get there.
Traffic Jame
Hyde Park corner presented one of the worst traffic scened. A brilliant flare failed to penetrate the mist more than a few feet. Hundreds of vehicles of all kinds were jammed in long lines which were able to move only a few inches at a time. In less congested districts chauffeurs and extra bus drivers walked ahead with flares to light the way for their vehicles. The remarkable thing has been that such/ accidents as have occurred have been principally of small moment and most injuries have been minor. One of the
