NEWS BRIEF. From the Baltimore Sun. Wednesday, January 27, 1892. A conference will be held in Washington between commissioners representing Great Britain and the United States in regard to the seal fisheries. The Ohio House of Representatives has appointed a committee to investigate the allegations of bribery in the senatorial contest in that State. Senator Sherman has written a letter. The Associated Press announcement to the effect that the Bank of Jefferson, at Shepherdstown, W. Va., had suspended because of the Nicholson failure in Baltimore, was incorrect. The bank did temporarily close, but resumed business last week, and everything is going on all right. In the House, Mr. Breckinridge, of Kentucky, offered a resolution calling on the President for further information in regard to the Chilian correspondence. After debate the resolution was referred to the committee on foreign affairs. The new code of rules was discussed, and during the debate politics was introduced. Mr. Rayner, of Maryland, spoke strengly against free silver coinage, and paid a hearty tribute to the ability and courage of Grover Cleveland, The Maryland Legislature reassembled last night. It is thought the election of State treasurer and police commissioner will be deferred until next week. Bills reorganizing the bureau of labor statistics and abolishing extra charges for transfers on different lines of the same street railway companies will be introduced. A committee from the German societies of Baltimore will ask that measures be taken for the relief of oyster dredgers kept on vessels against their wills. The report of the State tax commission will be submitted to the Legislature this week. The Department of State at Washington yesterday received a dispatch from Minister Egan giving the reply of Chili to the final demand of the United States. The contents of the dispatch were not given out officially, but it is understood that Chili agrees to withdraw and apologize for the circularletter written by ex-Minister Matta imputing insincerity and falsehood to the government at Washington, to withdraw the request for the recall of Minister Egan, and to submit the Baltimore affair to some neutral power or to the decision of the Supreme Court of the United States. The reply is said to be satisfactory as to the Matta incident, and that much of the affair is regarded as closed. Thursday, January 28, 1892. Thomas Thompson, colored, is to be hanged at Chestertown, Md., tomorrow, for the murder of another colored man. At Alexandria, Va., Jefferson Phillips was sentenced to be hung March 25th for the murder of Geo. S. Smith. Committees from the Maryland Legislature visited Washington and officially notified Hon. Arthur P. Gorman and Hon. Charles H. Gibson of theirelection as United States Senators. News was brought to Baltimore by steamboat of the destruction by fire of the handsome dwelling of NE!
