Banking In Superior. From Street Inland Ocean. The condition of the banks of Supe rior, asshown by their statements pub lished of date Jan. 4, 1802. is an ex ceedingly favorable one. At the sam date last year there were eight bank in operation, the International haying just opened its doors and the Bank o Commerce not being open. As th latter soon after resumed business oi a much larger scale it is only fair t include it in last year's column. The Superior National bank, while al housed and ready for business on Jan 4, 1892, still lacked a safe to hold it lucre, and can, therefore, only be in cluded in this year's statement to th extent of the two items of capital and cash, and other items, the latter iten being the bank property at the corne of Tower and Seventh, for which stock is understood to have been issued to the value of $35,000. The First National has increased it deposits by $153,682, its loans b $10,000, while its cash items show a de crease'of about $6,000. A manifest1 conservative statement. The Bank of West Superior ha fallen off somewhat in deposits, due t the fact that in January, 1891. it wa made the object of an incipient run and its friends came to the rescu with large temporary deposits; it loans and discounts have increased b $20,000, and its cash decreased b $15,382. The Bank of Superior has a falling off in deposits of $62,681, due to th recent heavy drafts from the eit treasurer: its loans and discounts fo low suit by a contraction of $37,45 and its cash items a falling away o $17,930. The State Bank of Wisconsin show an increase in capital amounting t $210,000, one half of which is paid in making the actual increase $120,00 although the unpaid stock is liable t call at any time at the instance ( the state officials, and the stockholder are liable for the full amount sul scribed by them in case the ban should fail. The deposits of this ban show an increase of $159,503, its loan and discounts $299,906, and its cash decrease of $23,018. The increase i the business of this bank would b notable anywhere. The Douglas County bank shows a increase of $4,681 in deposits, $25,31 in loans and discounts, and a decreas $28,968 in its cash items. A very con mendable aud healthy showing. The American Exchange bank in creased its deposits $38,206, its loan and discounts $10,203, and its cas items $13,200, which is fairly indica tive of the growth of the business di trict surrounding it. The Keystone National increased it deposits 831,399, its loans and di counts $44,764, while its cash fell o $13,419, a statement compatible wit the best of banking. considering the the semi-annual dividend was a 5 Pᶜ cent one. The International Bank was no famly in operation at the beginning o 1891, but seems to have made an in pression on business circles. It ha a comfortable line of deposits, loan and discounts.
