Here And There In Wisconsin
Sold Liquor to Hospital prohibition ficers arrested Lawrence Hanson, 47, and his wife, who live adjacent to the soldiers' hospital at Farewell Point, across Lake Mendota, on charges of possession and sale of liquor to inmates and attendants at the hospital. The couple were arraigned before United States Court Commissioner Frank R. Bentley here and held under 500 bonds each to appear before the next grand jury.
Attorney Held For Slander Portage-George W. Stephens, Columbus attorney, was held to trial in circuit court on charges of criminal slander in a hearing before Judge Chester A. Fowler, Fond du Lac. Stephens provided bonds of $1,000, fixed by Judge Fowler. The attorney is charged with making statements regarding the Farmers and Merchants Union bank at Columbus, which led to a run on the bank The charges have been denied by officials of the bank.
Rail Worker Near Death
WATERTOWN Joseph Kutcher, 60, a Milwaukee road employe, was near death here after being hit by a Milwaukee road train. Kutcher, who is the father of six children, apparently was struck by the train while walking home from work along the railroad tracks. He was discoverd.lying beside the tracks near the Tenth street crossing. He was taken to a hospital, where it was found his right arm was badly mangled, his hip crushed and that he was suffera possible skull fracture.
Trucks Go Through Ice
PRAIRIE DU CHIEN-Tw heavily loaded trucks belonging to the Northern Iowa Products company, broke through the ice on the Mississippi, between this city and McGregor, Iowa. They were loaded with lumber from a mill in this city and were transporting it to one of the company's plants on the Iowa side. The lumber had been roped to one machine and floated the truck. The other driver had not taken such precaution and load of lumber floated, but the truck went to the bottom in 26 feet of water.
Pole Smashes Auto, Two Escape CHIPPEWA FALLS-John Blaskitt and Miss Minnie Schwartz nar rowly escaped serious injury or possible death when the automobile in which they were riding crashed into a telephone pole when Blaskitt, who was driving, turned sharply into ditch to avoid colliding with a train at a grade crossing here. A 10-foot section of the pole crashed into the car, missing them by inches. Both escaped with minor cuts.
End 36 Years' Teaching SUPERIOR-After 36 years as teacher, J. S. Roesler, grammar school teacher here, will retire at the end of this month. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1888 and was formerly principal of Sheboygan high school He will become an annuitant under the state retirement system.
Miner Falls To Death Fallying from the thirtieth level to the bottom of the Ottawa shaft of the Montreal mine, three miles west of here, Olivo Goshetti, 31, was killed. He was working in the shaft and fell from one platform to another below him and bounded off that into the shaft. It was the first mine fatality of the Gogebic range this year.
Portage Church Celebrates PORTAGE- special musical program has been arranged for Sunday evening to dedicate the new $8,600 organ at St. Mary's Catholic ehurch here by the Rev. J. B. Piette. Among the artists are Arthur E. Bergman, organist; Anthony Olinger, Waukesha, baritone; and Miss Adah Fiske, Milwaukee, violinist. Parole Hearings Jan. 27 GREEN hearings will be held here Jan: 27, according to an announcement by Earl H. Eklund of the Wisconsin state reformatory. A large number of cases are scheduled to be heard. The population of the reformatory has been increased ,due to recent transfers from the state prison at Waupun, to 440 prisoners, the highest number the institution has ever had.
Main Street Has Wolves RICE made wild seramble for safety when a huge timber welf galloped the full length of Main street in this city. Local sportsmen immediately took up the chase and Henry Schneider succeeded in shooting the animal a few miles north of the city limits.
