OUR BANKS AND THE PANIC.-The - Benningtoo Banner says that when lion T. W. Park was asked, during the recent stringency ID the mo:ey market, what the ffect would be upontrade and maou actures and what course the country banks would take with their customers, he promptly replied, he did not know what others would do but that the North Bennington Bink would provide it-elf with sufficient currency to enable the manufacturers depending on it to pay ff their help every Saturity night, and the community to continue its business in all egitimare channels. This WHS nobly said, and we believe it was faithfully carried into practice And we are proud to record tha our Montpelier Banks are entitled to great praise for like commendable action. The Montpelier National Bank not only supplied all its depositore with currency sufficient to pay off their help and transact their legitimate business, but it also furnished currency n large amounts to such of its patrons as had no deposits, and could not well carry on their usual r necessary business transactions without a supply of bank notes. The First National Bank or Montpelier also met the situation resolutely and in a spirit of the greatest accommodation. It paid its depostors' checks promptly, cashed most of the checks of other banks, which found their way to its counter in the necessary or usual way, by the hands of its patrons, discounted somewhat to those whose business interests would otherwise have suffered, and gave ample proof that a sale well-conducted bankng institution is a handy thing to have in a town during a string ney in the money market at large commercial centers. We never had a bit of patience with the insame clamor sometimes indulged in about bank monopoly or the cry for ". down with the bank nabobs," and we think the wise and though ful course pursued by the Montpelier banks during the recent crieis is proof positive that there is every reason why the people should stand by and encourage and be grateful for such substantial, safe and accommodating banks as e the two in this village prove themselves to be.

A Good INSTITUTION. - The First National Bank of Montpelier is another creditable instance of how "a liberal, bold and generous policy" will work to the advantage of any bank which pursues it in time of a financial panic. This bank has answered all demands made upon it for currency during the recent panic, and now its available assets exceed those of a month ago by 841,000, and its deposits have increased more than $21,000 during the same period. It is during such a crisis at this that banks have an opportunity to demonstrate their usefulness, and those which pursue a liberal course at such a time will be pretty sure to reap a rich reward, as we are glad to learn our banksare doing.
