PERSONAL-BRIEF ITEMS.-Judge - Welch, of Caroline, is in the city on a visit to his brother-in-law. Captain T. R. Dew, who is under the medical treatment of Dr. MeGuire. We are glad to hear that he is improving. Dr. E. H. Smith, the newly-appointed consul to Naples, Mr. William T. Shields, of Lexington, formerly of the Whig, and Mr. D. Cardwell, assistant general passenger agent and freight agent of the Centrai Short Line, were in the city yesterday. Mr. J. Orville Verser, of the Danville, Va., Tobacco Leaf, is in the city. A white man, John McLain, formerly of Richmond, has been arrested in Washington. charged with the theft of a vest and a gold watch and chain, valued at $370, from Mr. S. Omobundro, agent of the New York and Norfolk line of steamers. The paper boat recently purchased by the Olympic boat-club has been condemned and will be sent back. The First district station-house is being thoroughly repaired, repainted and made comfortable. The station houses of the First and Second district are both LOW in good condition, but that of the Third needs attention sadly. The civil docket in the Hustings Court will be called this morning. The County Court of Henrico was in session yesterday but transacted no basi. ness of importance. The court will meet again 0-day. The stalls at the Old Market house have been repainted and the market-place presents a very neat and clean appearance. There was a large attendance at the illumination and concert at Sanger Hall last night. For fear that all the delegates to the late State Convention had not left the city, passengers on the Danville railroad vesterday were required to show their tickets before entering the cars. The Merchants National Bank kept open house from 12 M. to 2 P. M. yesterday at their new banking-rooms. From the number of callers we were led to believe that either a run was being made on the bank or that it was the most popular institution of the kind in the city. The fair at Harris's hall. on Third street, for the benetit of ** L'Overture Guard," has been a success. The committee of management was composed of Edward Thompson (chairman), Isaac Dammels, P. B. Shorts, B. F. Turner, James H. Hill, and Albert Banks. The steamer Louise will make an excursion to Old Point and Norfolk to-night, returning Sunday night at 10 o'clock. Nothing is more delightful this hot weather than a surf-bath and a sail on the water.
