# THE ATCHISON BANKS. Yesterday morning we read in the telegrams that the Atchison banks had plenty of currency. We learn from a very reliable gentleman that they have no currency and that merchants' checks are not paid when they exceed $50. The merchants, however, are depositing as usual and have confidence in the banks. A currency acceptance was sent from a St. Joseph bank to one of the banks in Atchison last Tuesday, and no return had been received yesterday. Who is the Associrted Press agent at Atchison?β€”St. Joseph Herald. Bankers of this city tell us that the Atchison banks have drawn in full, and in some instances overdrawn, their currency balances in Leavenworth banks. All the banks of any magnitude in the United States have been compelled during the past week to take measures to protect themselves and depositors from reckless runs. We are satisfied that the Atchison banks are no stronger than like institutions in New York, Chicago and Leavenworth, and if they have not publicly announced a determination to protect themselves by limiting the payment of currency for a few days, they are at least doing that very thing by common consent.
