FINANCE AND TRADE. South Dakota Indians have raised a large wheat crop this year. The Cudahys will invest about $2,000,000 in a pipe line to rival the Standard Oil company. The Citizens bank of Centerville, S. D., has assigned, with liabilities of $6,000 and assets at $25,000. Merrill, Ring & Co., extensive lumber dealers at Toledo and Duluth, have asked a conference with creditors. The big manufacturers of bicycles have formed an association to "promote a good understanding among its members." It is reported that the millers combination is broken and that millers are free to do as they please regarding prices. The Kelly Nail and Iron works and the Belfont lron works of Ironton, O., have resumed operations, giving employment to 1,200 men. The T. T. Haydock Carriage company of Cincinnati, has assigned to the Union Savings and Trust company. Assets $20,000, liabilities $150,000. All the banks of Winnipeg are charging a discount of 10 per cent on United States silver, and they only accept it from patrons having large accounts. Russell Sage says there is not a word of truth in the reported impending consolidation between the Western Union and the American Bell Telephone company. The Elgin sewing machine and bicycle shops at Elgin, Ills., have shut down, because they could not borrow money on good security to pay their hands. Stocks of butter in the United States amount to 772,000 tubs, against 627,700 tubs last year, an increase of 23 per cent. Supply of eggs, 1,163,300 cases, against 1,212,000 cases last year, a decrease of 5 per cent. It is reported that an American syndicate has offered the Argentine Republic $150,000,000 in silver in exchange for $100,000,000 in bonds payable in gold at 4 per cent interest with a half per cent added as a sinking fund. The offer is part of the general plan by which Argentina is seeking a specie basis.
