SHOT SCARES BANK'S PATRONS. Young Man Shoots Himself Because Stenographer Refuses to See Him. CHICAGO, May 12.-Because the woman he loved refused to see him, Alvah T. Portlock, son of a prominent citizen of Knoxville, Tenn., committed suicide to-day in the trust department of the Northern Trust Company Bank. Portlook called at the bank and sent a message to Miss Margaret May, a stenographer employed there. The reply was that Miss May would not see him. Portlock drew a revolver from his pooket, placed the muzzle just above his heart and pulled the trigger. The report caused a panic in the bank. Women depositors, who were standing in a long line before the teller's window, screamed, and one girl fainted. The police had much difficulty in dispersing the crowd around the doors. Portlook was taken to the Chicago Emergency Hospital, where he regained consciousness for a moment and said that he had been engaged to Miss May and that her refusal to marry him had made him desperate.

Nine companies suffered no loss. I CHICAGO, III.. July 30.-Byron Smith resigned yesterday as receiver of the Traders' Fire of Chicago and the court appointed the State Bank of Chicago as his successor. 11. A. Haugan, the president of the bank. will be the active man in the handling of the affairs of the company. When Mr. Smith accepted the receivership early in May it was with the belief that he might be able to assist in a settlement. All hope of that apparently has been abandoned, and Mr. Smith was no longer willing to take SO much of his time from his duties as president of the Northern Trust company as the receivership required.
