SPARKS FROM THE WIRES. Fireman Lyons and Postal Clerk Burnett were killed near Alderson, W. Va., in a col lision. Ex-Gov. Safford, of Arizona, died at his home in Tarpan Springs, Fla., after an illness of over a year. Frank Sparks killed J. G. Delong and Denton Duke at East Barnard, Texas. The men had quarreled. The Conover Bros. company, of New York, piano manufacturers. became insolvent and George W. Cottrell was appointed receiver. The influenza is raging throughout Massachusetts. Mills and schools are suffering and every workshop, store and profession is affected. The general passenger agents on the trunk lines killed the Alton boycott and devised a new scheme to prevent the payment of commissions on passenger traffic. The case of the Adams Express company against Ex-President Hoey will be settled out of court. The terms of the compromise will involve the return of about $500,000 to the company by Hoey. The creditora' committee of the Bank of Columbia and the Columbia Banking com , pany, of Columbia, S. C., are now insolvent. It is reported that the banks will pay 60 or 70 centa on the dollar and probably more. What is supposed to be the first carload of pig tin ever mined on the North American continent arrived at Pittsburg. It came from Durango, Mexico, and is the property of the Pittsburg and Mexican Tin Mining company.
