The New York Assembly has authorized inquiry into the recent so-called coal combination. Gen. Thomas Ewing, of Ohio, addressed the Maryland Legislature on the 22d, on the silver and currency question. The officers of the Trenton (N. J.) Savings Bank have been arrested on the charge of conspiracy in taking and using funds of said bank and the depositors thereof. The New Hampshire Prohibitory Convention on the 23d nominated Asa S. Kendall for Governor. Strong prohibitory resolutions were adopted. E. K. Collins, the founder of the first American steamship line to Europe, died on the 22d. The National State Bank, of New York city, has suspendep. The New York Senate on the 23d rejected the nomination of Daniel Magone to be Superintendent of Public Works. Judge and Mrs. Asa Packer, of Mauch Chunk, Pa., celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage on the 24th. Many leading citizens of Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey were present. The Connecticut House of Representatives has adopted resolutions opposing Bland's Silver bill and favoring the resumption of specie payments. The Finance Committee of the Massachusetts House of Representatives has adopted a bill making the entire State debt payable in geld. Five of the Reading (Pa.) railroad rioters of last July have each been sentenced to six months' imprisonment. On the 25th the Board of Control of the great coal companies met at Philadelphia and signed an agreement binding them all to fulfill the combination contract. The Casement Savings Bank, at Union City Pa., has failed. R. & J. J. Watson, coal dealers of Pittsburgh, are bankrupts. New York banks hold over $50,000,000 in gold. E. J. Hoppins, tried at Auburn for the murder of Philip Proudfit at Mt. Sterling, N. Y. last July, was acquitted on the 25th. Half an hour after the verdict was given he was married.
