The oath of office of Elmer E. Garr, the new superintendent of the public schools of Carbondale, was filed with Prothonotary Copeland yesterday. The Kriss Stationery company of Wilkes-Barre yesterday brought suit against the school district of Fell town- ship to recover $317.44 for school sup- plies sold to the district from Oct. 9, 1897, to Nov. 27, 1897. In the cases of the city of Scranton against Roger McGowan, Mrs. Mary Pritchard and Mrs. Mary Williams, West Scranton property owners, rules were granted to show cause why claims filed should not be stricken off. Attorney James Mahon yesterday secured a rule to show why indict- ments against Joseph Kilpatrick, charging robbery and highway robbery, C. M. Butts, who is charged with a serious offense by County Detective Leyshon yesterday entered new bail in the sum of $500. Thomas J. Dunn became security for him. On order of court was made yester- day by Judge Archbald directing the payment of a 12 per cent. dividend to the creditors of the Hyde Park bank. The total amount of money on deposit when the bank assigned was $30,425.50. The amount of money in the hands of S. B. Mott, assignee of the bank, for distribution now is $3,651.06, which is exactly 12 per cent. of the claims. Claflin, Thayer & Company, whole- sole merchants of New York, began an action in trespass yesterday against S. C. Gernon, of this city, to recover the value of sample shoes given into his custody while he was traveling sales- man for the firm and which, it is charged, he has not surrendered, al- thought repeatedly urged to do so. The suit was brought for the plaintiffs by Willard, Warren & Knapp.
