Seattle, May 27.-Following a conference with Governor Hay, state bank examiner Mohundro today issued an order suspending former Senator Boone as deputy bank examiner pending an investigation of the affairs of the defunct Palouse state bank, of which Boone was president for many years. Boone sold his interest in January to W. J. Hankinson, vice president. Examiner Mohundro said: "Hankinson and the old national bank of Spokane, to which the Palouse bank is indebted, went to the superior court in Colfax and asked the appointment of a temporary receiver without calling in my office, or making the banks condition known to us. We discovered on examination that the books are about fifty thousand dollars in the hole. The amount may be more or less, and in my opinion is, all due to poor management on the part of the bank officials prior to and during Boone's administration. It is not known whether the suspension of Boone will be permanent."

FIRED THE DEPUTY BANK EXAMINER [United Press Leased Wire.] San . rancisco, May 27.-Followinging a conference with Governor Hay, State Bank Examiner Mohundro today issued an order suspending exSenator Boone as deputy bank examiner pending an investigation into the affairs of the defunct Palouse State bank, of which Boone was president for a number of years. Boone sold his interests in January last to W. J. Hankinson, the vice president of the institution. In discussing Boone's suspension, Mr. Mohundro said: "Hankinson and the old national bank of Spokane, to which the Palouse bank was indebted, went to the superior court at Colfax and asked for the appointment of a temporary receiver without calling in my office or making the bank's condition known to us. "I found on examination that the bank was about $50,000 in the hole. It may be more, it may be less. "In my opinion, it is all due to poor management on the part of the bank officials prior to and during Boone's administration. A Few Interesting Items Gathered From Our Exchanges of the Surrounding Country-Numerous Accidents and Personal Events Take Place-Spring Outlook Is Good. WASHINGTON STATE NEWS. The beautiful home of J. H. Turner, the pioneer wheat buyer at Ritzville, was destroyed by fire Saturday. A. G. Culver died recently at the soldiers' home at Orting. Mr. Culver was 93 years old and the oldest man in the home. He had been an inmate for nine years. Prior to that time he lived near Palouse for 20 years. French Ambassador Jusserand, accompanied by Mme. Jusserand and party, are in Seattle to visit the AlaskaYukon-Pacific exposition. Hosea Hillyer of Spokane, who has been employed on the Western Pacific as a bridge carpenter, has disappeared and it seems certain that he has been drowned in the Feather river, 20 miles from Oroville. Falling in front of a Northern Pacifis switch engine in the yards at Spokane Sunday, Michael Papovich, an Austrian, was run over and fatally injured. The citizens of Cheney have donated $500 for an "old settlers' pienic," to be held there July 3. Colonel T. M. Fisher, federal immigration inspector, fell to the sidewalk and expired in 20 minutes of heart failure at Walla Walla Saturday. The prospects for a big crop of wheat have not been better in many years. The enrollment of the summer session at the state normal school at Cheney has reached 149, which is 83 more than the previous summer. The Sunnyside postoffice now occupies its new quarters in the Harrison brick block. The pioneers of western Klickitat county met in White Salmon Saturday to celebrate the 18th anniversary of their organization. C. W. Waters has been appointed receiver for the Palouse State bank. Applications for railroad rights of way were filed in the state land office by the Northern Pacific covering parts of four sections in Grant county. Jesse Jones of Tacoma was reappointed state railroad commissioner by Governor Hay. The state college has secured the cooperation of the Northern Pacific railway company for the purpose of conducting a mammoth farm demonstration train over the lines of that company in western Washington, starting at Vancouver June 21, and ending at Puyallup June 26. Charles W. Mohr of Spokane was elected president of the Inland Empire Threshermen's association for the fourth consecutive term at the recent meeting of that organization. The quarantine, which has been on for weeks, preventing children from attending Sunday schools, theaters and parks, and older people from going to dances, has been lifted at Spokane, and all restrictions removed by order of the board of health. A resolution to divide Skagit county into three judicial districts has been passed by the board of county commissioners at Mount Vernon. At Seattle recently H. F. Archibold shot himself through the heart, and H. H. Bean of Chicago cut his throat.

Suneson and John Wan- key, diamond drill men in the Walter Scott mine near Northport, lost their lives Sunday from bad air. After nearly 80 years of varied pio- neer life, George W. Conrad passed away at his home, Loon Lake recently. Luther George Hager, a member of the Post-Intelligencer staff, employed as cartoonist, recently married Miss Beat- rice Holbrook Dearborn, heiress in her own right to a fortune estimated at a half million dollars. The Palouse river is covered with ice six to eight inches thick, and teams are at work putting up a supply. Nick Brunski committed suicide at Spokane. January 1 was the coldest New Year's day ever officially recorded in Seattle, the temperature having fallen to 27 above zero. C. W. Waters, receiver of the defunct Palouse State Bank, has announced that he will pay the creditors a dividend of 20 per cent on their claims as a New Year's remembrance, the payment to be made January 5. Preliminary plans for fighting frost next spring have been perfected and nearly every orchard along the Colum- bia river from White Bluffs to Hoover will be equipped with smudge pots be- fore chill nights of early spring come. The first Union Pacific train to enter Seattle arrived Sunday afternoon. The town of Cunningham has let the contract for sinking a well for city and fire use. K. C. Kohler, Ellensburg, F. M. Roth- rock, Spokane, and R. A. Jackson, Day- ton, have been appointed by Governor M. E. Hay as delegates to the National Wool Growers' association, which meets at Ogden, Utah, January 6, 7 and 8. The postoffice department is sending out warnings to the public and to its offices in regard to money order blanks from the town of Ostrander, this state. These orders were taken in a robbery of that office on July 13 last and their numbers run from 6259 to 6400, inclus- ive. J. M. Bennington of Ritzville pleaded guilty to a charge of forgery and was sentenced to Walla Walla for not less than three nor more than 20 years. Spokane bank clearings for 1909, were $206,504,834, showing a gain of $52,619,093 over 1908, an increase of 34 per cent. The Walla Walla wireless telegraph station is in operation and already the operator, John F. Titus, has succeeded in getting into communication with a point in the Pacific ocean within 500 miles of the Hawaiian islands. T. H. McGown, a farmer living near Garfield, was recently fined $15 and costs for violation of the compulsory education law in that he refused to send his two sons, aged 8 and 15 years, to school. The health officer has posted notices at Chewelah forbidding any public gath- erings and schools on account of scarlet fever. E. E. Lambirth of Davenport sold 23,000 bushels of wheat for $1.10 per bushel net, after paying all warehouse charges. Revised estimates of the Alaska and Puget Sound salmon pack for 1909 place the total at 3,917,000 cases, valued at $17,206,000. The Alaska pack was worth $2,000,000 more than that of the Sound. The Odd Fellows of Wenatchee are preparing to erect a new building. At Ephrata a commercial club was organized recently with a membership of 25. At Dayton William A. Crossler, a well known farmer, was granted a decree of divorce from Mamie Crossler on the grounds of incompatibility of temper. According to recent statistics of the state railway commissioner, 1240 miles of new railroad is projected to affect the Inland Empire and the state of Wash- ington in 1910. For the second time within 20 years a case of leprosy was recently discov- ered in Seattle and the victim ordered deported to the government leper col- ony in the Hawaiian islands. BANK CREDITORS TO GET CASH. Receiver Waters of the Defunct Palouse State Bank Will Begin Disbursements. C. W. Waters, receiver of the defunct Palouse State bank, advises The Republic that unless some unexpected matter arises to interfere, the first dividend to the creditors will be paid between the 1st and the 10th of January. It is the intention now to make the first payment 20 per cent. The claims are practicvally all in, including those from banks from which the Palouse State has borrowed money, and the aggregate is close to $150,000. While the amount of the first payment is not large, it will nevertheless be thankfully received as a New Year's gift. While there is more than enough money on hand to pay the 20 per cent, it is necessary to retain some for emergencies, such as taking up mortgages in order to save property for the depositors. It is the belief of Mr. Waters that the affairs of the defunct institution will be fully settled up by next fall, and while the amount realized is uncertain, he is of the belief that it will be at least 50 cents on the dollar, although it is impossible to make any definite statement as to the amount because of the numerous complications. SELLS PALOUSE BANK PAPER. George Jewett Gets $737 for Stockholders of Institution. Palouse - George C. Jewett, received of the Palouse State bank, which was closed in May, 1909, offered for sale at public auction all the stocks, bonds, promissory notes and other securities, and realized $737 cash. The so-called Swartwood paper, amounting, with accrued interest, to $29,140, and secured by $16,000 of the Palouse Clay Pottery company's stock, was offered, but not sold. The receiver put the price of $500 upon it, and was offered only $200. One share of Palouse Creamery stock sold for $33. One hundred and seven shares of Palouse Athletic association stock, face value of $5 a share, sold for $325. A large batch of promissory notes, all past maturity, from two to three years, sold for trifling amounts.
