Description

Articles from late September 1857 report that the Penn Township Bank suspended specie payments as part of the broader panic (many Philadelphia and out‑of‑city banks suspending). No article here reports a run specifically on Penn Township, nor any receivership or permanent closure; given the 1857 panic context, temporary suspension with eventual resumption is most likely, so I classify as suspension_reopening. Source quotes and dates used are from newspapers dated 1857-09-26 to 1857-09-28. OCR spacing/typos corrected (e.g., 'Penn Township and onsolidation Banks have sus pended' -> 'Penn Township and Consolidation Banks have suspended').
