Description

May 1857: two peddlers circulated a false story that the bank had suspended (a deliberate dodge). October 1857: notes redeemed at the Philadelphia Bank — bank had been 'thrown out for a few days' because its redeeming agent in the city suspended. November 1857: the bank is listed among local banks in the resolution during the statewide suspension of specie payments. No article reports a depositor run or receivership; suspension appears to be the statewide specie suspension and not a permanent failure. Classification: suspension_reopening (suspension during statewide specie stoppage; later redemption activity suggests eventual resumption).
