LA PLATA BANK CLOSED TODAY Cashier Insane, State Finance Department Orders Investigation—Nothing Known Wrong. (By Associated Press Leased Wire) JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., April 30.—The LaPlata Savings Bank, at LaPlata, Mo., has been closed for examination by the State Finance Department, Assistant Finance Commissioner A. J. Stanfield announced today. Closing of the bank was ordered by the directors due to H. J. Mairens, cashier, going insane, according to Stanfield. "The directors deemed an investigation wise although it is not known whether anything is wrong with the bank's affairs," Stanfield said. Roy Nieman and Sam Sharp, examiners of the finance department, are at LaPlata starting the examination. A financial report of the bank filed with the finance department April 3 showed the total resources of the bank at $506,836.78, total deposits at approximately $422,300, personal and collateral loans at $331,353, real estate loans at $100,940, the capital stock at $50,000 and the surplus at $10,000. JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., April 30.—The American State Bank at Kansas City, Mo., has been closed by examiners of the State Finance Department, according to a statement made here today by A. J. Stanfield, deputy state finance commissioner. "We have found conditions which justify the closing of the bank but have hopes of its reorganization," Stanfield said. The financial report of the American State Bank at Kansas City, filed with the State Finance Department here April 3, showed the total resources of the bank at $622,854, total deposits at approximately $505,000, capital stock at $100,000, surplus funds at $11,300, personal and collateral loans at $380,605, and real estate loans at $84,429.

FORGERY CHARGED HEAD OF CLOSED BANK AT K. C. Kansas City, June 20.—R. Lee Davis, president of the American State bank here, which was closed by the state banking department April 3, was charged with forgery late today. A note for $7,600 figures in the charges, H. P. Ragland, an assistant prosecutor, announced. The alleged forgery arises, Mr. Ragland said, from the intermingling of the affairs of the American State bank and the American Motor Securities Company, which Davis headed.

Ex-Banker Pleads Not Guilty. (By the Associated Press) Kansas City, Mo., July 25.—R. Lee Davis, president of the defunct American State Bank of Kansas City, pleaded not guilty today to three indictments returned against him yesterday charging larceny, embezzlement and forgery in connection with the failure of the bank, April 30. Bonds were fixed at $2,500 for each indictment and trial set for September 17. The wife of the defendant was accepted as surety on the bonds.
