REMINISCENCES OF LONG AGO Interesting Happenings Gleaned from the Early Files of The News. Forty-five Years Ago This Week-1872 The Conn. Western railroad began carrying mails between Hartford an Millerton. Freeman Vosburgh and a Mr. Curtiss of Salisbury bought building lots east cf the Episcopal church and com menced building houses. Stage-driver Austin celebrated the twelfth anniversary of the beginning O his stage route between Millerton and Falls Village, in which time his team covered the road 7488 times. Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Grant, Lakeville, celebrated their wooden wedding.* William Preston of Falls Village was accidentally shot in the head by Al mond Thorp of Lime Rock while hunt ing foxes. Clark Heady, Norfolk, died Jan. 27 aged 50. Forty-four Years Ago This Week-1873 The postoffice at North Norfolk was discontinued. The C. H. Keyes place in Mill River was destroyed by fire. A team belonging to William Shields of Canaan was stolen from in front of Bradley's hall, Falls Village, after a dance. West Cornwall shipped 1700 cans of milk during the month of January. The official board of the Canaan M. E. church advertised a donation visit to their pastor, Rev. J. H. Lane, to be held Feb. 14. Forty-three Years Ago This Week-1874 A "crazy drunk" marched through the East Canaan streets with his coat off, swinging a 'Linife, howling, and frightening the residents. Two fishermen, named Choulet and Shula, broke through the ice on Ca DRAIL mountain pond. The latter got out but the former was drowned. The contract was let for the building of a cream:ery at Sheffield, by the Farmer's Milk Co. The proprietors of the Old Hill ore bed in Salisbury divided upward of $30,000. a dividend of 115 per cent. Mrs. T. L. Norton, Lakeville (daughtel U. Rev. Dr. Reid of isbury died Jan. 29 ,aged 29. Walter Mahoney, an employee of Barnum Richardson Co., East Canaan, boarded a passenger train at Canaan, refused to pay his fare, was put off the train between the stations, slipped on the ice and broke his leg. The house belonging to Charles Sage in Sheffield was destroyed by fire. Rev. I. P. Powell resigned as pastor of East Canaan church. Forty-two Years Ago This Week 1875 James Hoysradt of Salisbury shot a wild cat on East mountain. The Ashely Falls depot was broken into and about a dollar in charge taken. Cora, an eight-years-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Whitman of Lakeville, died Jan. 27. A load of sleighriders from Canaan made the night hideous and stole a blanket and lap robe from Dr. Granger's sleigh, in Ashley Falls. There had been five continuous weeks of sleighing to date. The Norfolk Savings Bank assets were advertised to be sold at auction by the receivers. A misdirected blow cut off the end of one boot and three of his toes. William Jones of Lakeville suffered a slight shock of apop.exy The question of building a road around Lake Wononscopomac in Lakeville was being agitated A tenement house belonging to Frank Reed and occupied by Milo anAlsyne in West Cornwall, was destroyed by fire. H. W. Thorp of Salisbury died Jan. 31, aged 63. Frank VanDeusen and Miss Emma VanDeusen, both of Canaan, were married at Millerton, Jan. 31. Forty Years Ago This Week-1877 H. C. Crandall of Bridgeport, formerly of West Cornwall, bought the Herman property in Falls Village. The Salisbury Village Improvement association gave a sleigh-ride to Sharon and return, seventeen teams partici pating. A supper and dance in the evening followed. The Norfolk freight depot was broken into and several gallons of whiskey stolen. Charles Hanchett of Falls Village went to Orange, N. J., to work in a shop. Ambrose Clark of Salisbury returned from a trip to Iowa. Mrs. Joseph Huggins, Sheffield, j.ed Jan. 29, aged co. Thirty-nine Years Ago This Week-1878 W. M. Deming of Canaan went to Brooklyn to enter the photographing business. John Ten Eyck, the murderer of Mr. and Stillman was ar before Judge raigned Mrs. of Colt Sheffield, in Pittsfield. He pleaded not guilty.
