Description

Newspaper reports (Jan 1862) state the Stark County Bank at Canton suspended specie payments (reported as last Tuesday or on the preceding Saturday). No mention of a depositor run, receivership, or later reopening/closure is given in these clippings. Because the sources only report a suspension without further disposition, I choose suspension_reopening as the most likely non-permanent outcome (many Civil War–era suspensions were temporary), but the ultimate status is not provided in the articles.

Bankers pay out small bills occasionally, but beyoud this a man might put into his pipe all the Ohio and Indiana notes that could be drawn on checks, in Third street, in the course of a day. Demand Treasury Notes constitute the currency now. This is handled freely by the bankers, and the idea of discrediting it is not entertained. In fact it cannot be dispensed with, and it is douhtful, from the rapidity with which Ohio and Indiana notes are disappearing, whether the amount of the $50,000,000 issue, that is likely to be kept out at the West, will be equal te the wants of business." NEW COUNTERFEITS.-New and dangerous counterfeits have just been issued on the Commercial Bank, Bristol, Rhode Island, and the Bank of Royalton, Vermont.
